These are some of the flies I have had good success with in the last year . most of them imitate bait fish.












Most of these flies are made by blue waterflies and are mostly saltwater flies.

After seven years, I swopped flyfishing for conventional because I could not catch large bass on fly.
But geez, I miss the fly-tying. I enjoyed doing that a lot.
I still got all my equipment. I think I should take what I've learned the past year with conventional and design some flies and go try them.

The white ones seems to the trick every time. Having said that I also had reasonable sucsess with a "Wooly Bugger" (brown in color) at Cragieburn.

If you throw big flies you will catch big bass in between the rats!

Yup, I realised that early
I got a lot of saltwater flies like that in white, flashy and cartruese. Must try it.
For bass I might put a bit more dark on the backs and a bit more light brown/ yellow on the upper sides.

I would (actually have) make a wooly bugger with a long tail, using zonker strips for tail. Would go blue (junebug) and green and brown.

I usually only fly in cleaner water so you can see the fly and the bass hitting it . Its just as much fun as top water but you can do it all day .

Warren I think you have convinced a few flyfisherman who have converted to "proper" bass fishing, I have dug out my old fly box today and check my tying box got most of the goods needed to make up the deceivers etc... next Silver fish off outing to Craigieburn, going to give it a go, got to check what rules say first dont want to be DQ.

Now that is an intersting thing, do you think some bas comp rules might not permit the use of fly rods? :blue-rolleyes:

most fly rods are about 9 or 10 feet and here lies the problem, it is against the rules

Hi All. I do a lot of fly fishing at night and have been working on some patterns that work well in total darkness. This Wounded Baitfish pattern is proving to be very effective at attracting bigger fish. Hook shank is weighted with lead wire just behind the eyes. Head is coated with clear glue to make it more rigid and push more water. Fly climbs and dives sharply when twitched and sinks slowly between retrieves. The paint job represents a baby bass. (For fishing in daylight)
Materials: Size 4 Mustad C52S BLN Stinger hook. 7mm Dolls eyes for buoyancy, movement and rattle effect. Synthetic Bucktail for belly. Chartreuse Frizz Fibre for overbody. Pentel waterproof Dark Olive permanent marker for back and barring. Red permanent marker for gills. Bostik clear glue for eye adhesive and head hardening. Thread 140 Ultra. Fly is 3 inches long.



...and the result is a 3kg Largie.
