Dear Mrs Bass

Let me start with apologizing for my actions. I know I put you through some stressful times and even go as far as locking you in a small dark room for an entire day, but if you would allow me the time I would like to try and justify my actions.

I know you have met some of my friends and although some of them probably don’t introduce themselves to you in the correct manner, they are all good guys and have your well being deep at heart. In fact for the short time you are visiting you are the only thing on our minds. Some of us even perform medical procedures on you like removing deeply imbedded hooks or treating infected wounds without having the correct qualifications (you could probably sue us for that) however we would go the extra mile for you any day. So just in case you were thinking we don’t care about you, we do. In fact every time you visit, whether you are big o small you do count!

Please also understand that we are not barbaric in the way we do things either. To get you to visit is almost like finding a mate for us humans. We need to spend thousands of rands and hundreds of hours on just getting your attention, the trick is obviously to find out which gift to offer on the right day, and if we find this combination then we seem to be able to sweep you off your feet. We select the best equipment our money can buy and realize that we also need to deliver your gifts in different ways and with different techniques to keep you interested and to accept those gifts. You are on our minds day and night, yes you could say we are in love with you.

I have often woken up at 4am and travel hundreds of miles just to try and get to your door first and offer my gifts of appreciation. I can easily say that when you do accept my gifts, every mile I have travelled to come and see you is well worth it. You fill me with adrenalin and a sense of accomplishment. I am no quitter either as you may have noticed, every time you refuse my gifts I go back home and try and think of what I done wrong, was I not offering the correct gifts? Did I want you to make up your mind to quickly? Maybe you were just in a bad mood? Whatever it was I lay awake at night trying to work out what went wrong and how to not make the same mistakes twice, alas as I am human, sometimes I do not learn from our mistakes but I do promise I always try and be a better man.

Sometimes people seem to also do the unthinkable and murder some of your friends; there is no excuse for this even if you are fairly tasty. Admittedly I have had some of your friends visit me and pass away on the operating table, I did mention we are not qualified doctors but we try anyway. When this happens it is not only you who is in mourning, we are to. A word of warning, if you hear the words “Give me rubber worm” you should swim in the opposite direction as these people are not your friends and will try and eat you!! Swim forest, swim!! So next time you visit me you can relax as I am one of your buddies.

I think you should be getting the picture by now that all we want to do is meet you in person and see how beautiful you are. I am sure I speak for everyone out there that you are probably one of the only things that we truly enjoy perusing and we look forward to each and every encounter. So just remember, next time you see one of us on the water we are there for you and only you. So feel free to pay me a visit next time I’m around, you know it will make my day.

I hope this letter has accomplished its goal and you now realize why we do what we do. Please send my regards to all your friends and family. I hope to see you soon.
