Ike, for Pike you will need to decide if you are gonna spin or fish with bait . If it's bait then choose a 11-12 foot one and three qtr pound test curve rod with a fast action. This will probably be sold as a carp rod. Buy blast frozen baits in sealed packs from the tackle shop but keep to sardine sized baits or you will overload the rod. Any fixed spool reel will work and most of the handles can be changed to the right (wrong) side. If you can afford it get a Shimano Baitrunner, put 12-15 Berkely Big Game on it and get a Nash wire trace for the business end. You also better buy a warm coat and a hat (crucial). Get a hat mad from "Thinsulate'.
Then go buy Neville Fickling's book which I think is called "Fishing for Big Pike'.
Do the above and you won't be in such a hurry to come back.

Yeah Tolla - but Trout fishing is kak in the winter. October is the start of the Pike season.

naaa jeff , i bought me a bib and brace and a lekka jacket, i tried it when it was pissing down with rain and it works ok , will let you know if it is any good against the cold , we had snow in london last night :blue-sad:

i'm gonna buy me that revo STX and vis for pike soon enough...but a bit of trout fishing will go down good...i'll be sure to pack the hip flask aka bottle of sherry.

Tolla, just in case you did'nt know. You can fish in the snow no problem. But once it starts to melt don't even bother. There's something in snow that stuffs up water, don't know if it's ozone or something. Also the salt run off from the roads knocks it dead for a couple of days. When the ice melts however is very different - the fish go mad.
Bib and brace with a seperate jacket is by far the best combination. Jackets with removable linings are also best. You should always buy a jacket one size too big as then you can wear one or two polar fleeces underneath. Another essential = thermal (moon) boots and a thermal hat. No need to be cold at all.
If ever you can get up around Northampton treat yourself to a day's trout fishing at Ravensthorpe. Plenty of nice size (up to 8lbs) fish in beautiful surroundings. Top fly in the summer = green or black buzzer.
