COF Approved Numbers

I noticed that there was doubt about the legality of Rob's boat number. I know that the common numbers issued to recreational craft starts with SR and ends with R. We were told that we could affiliate our club to SADSAA and then register our own number series to be issued for boats that passed the inspection. It is thus possible that the SADSAA Surveyor that issued Rob's number belongs to an affiliated club?

Rob, you can reassure yourself by asking him for his SADSAA Surveyor's number.

I saw on the SABAA AGM minutes that they will also be seeking affiliation and that SABAA members will get a BASS xxxx R number if they are sucessful. See the the extract below. BM, please protect me if I was not allowed to post this.... :blue-shock:

RE: ACCREDITATION AS AN AUTHORIZED AGENCY UNDER THE REGULATION 30 OF THE MERCHANT SHIPPING (NATIONAL SMALL VESSEL SAFETY) REGULATIONS 2007 (AS AMENDED)

As a duly authorized and appointed person I, Trevor Anthony Brown, ID No.: 660222 5202 081, do hereby apply to SAMSA that SABAA (South African Bass Angling Association) be recognised as a duly appointed and authorized agent to carry out the following:

a) The inspections and certification of recreational vessels for Inland waters only (Category R) Less than
9m.

b) The examination of skippers of motor driven vessels (less than 9m) under the national system.

In accordance with the merchant shipping (small vessels safety) regulations of 2007 (amended), we at SABAA are in the process of appointing the following persons to assist us in self-governance and regulation of our sport.
• Each Devision (5) shall appoint a safety officer.
• Each Province (13) shall appoint a safety officer.
• SABAA has appointed a National Safety Officer (1) who shall be responsible for the co-ordination and control of all listed above. Due to the nature of our sport and the fact that these are voluntary appointments, they are subject to change periodically. None of the persons currently fore filling some of these posts, are full time in the employ of the association, but do so of their own free will and commitment to the sport.

All vessels under SABAA will be inspected in accordance with the Small Vessel Survey Standard 8.2.4 of the Merchant Shipping Act (small vessels).

We are currently in the process of updating our National / Divisional / Provincial and Club data bases to incorporate the vessel C.O.F register numbers as well as our angler / skippers ticket (C.O.C) numbers. By nature of our numbers, this process would take some time to complete and is a matter of urgency on our part.

At this point I would like to apply for a National Register Number (if and when) we become an authorised agency for ease of identification of our vessels. If this number could be agreed as BASS **** R, it would be greatly appreciated, as our members have had to source other authorized agencies for the initial (current) C.O.F. If and when we are accredited the next inspections will be dealt with by SABAA inspection officers. We would then allocate a BASS number, we would record the old (current) C.O.F number for a period of one year for our and SAMSA records.

Ruffy, your on your own here... lol. Just kidding. I am sure it is fine to post this. Information is king! We need to know all aspects of what is happeneing and this seems to be everything we need to know for now.

If Mr Brown does not want this here I will remove it... but I doubt he will ever see it anyway as he is not a member :blue-badgrin:

Thanks Ruffy! My COF was issued by the local Triton Agents (Bluewater Marine) and I guess they have a fair idea what they are doing... and at least I can relax because I was expecting an SR number! :blue-biggrin:

Guys look at this site - the "A" is the prefix if the COF was is issued by SAI. (SA Institute for Skippers)

The guy that did my COF said I can use smaller numbers so, I made them something like 50 mm and put them on the outside of the two consoles on my boat.

I also made my numbers smaller, 100mm high lettering on a bass boat looks ugly, it's designed for bigger, sea going boats with a large freeboard. I made mine 70mm which is more in proportion, I'd be very surprised if somebody ever pulls out a tape to measure the letter height at the slipway.

There is defenitely limited space on a bass boat for a registration number! Imagine if you have to stick BAS 79897 R on your boat.... :blue-rolleyes:

I can see some changes to the requirements coming, or a seperate set of requirements for inland waters?

Ruffnek robs boat is so big you could put every number in the telephone book down the side of it and you will still have space to put a team dinger sticker on it :blue-lol:

I have just done my COF on the boat and the letters of the SR no are REGULATION 100 mm high( in black ) and because I have a Black hull I have had to fix the SR no on the upper white portion of the deck (very visible ) R60.00 for the set of two
Your name /contact details on the trailer can be smaller.
Somehow the standard being applied is NOT the same :blue-shock:
