Hi guys. A number of us kick boat / small boat anglers have decided to have a friendly Big Bass competition at Harties on 24 Oct 2015.

It's called the Spring Big Bass Challenge 2015. What makes this competition different is that the focus is on catching the biggest bass you can, rather than catching numbers of bass. Only the single heaviest fish from each angler will count and only the top 3 anglers will get trophies and/or prizes. No other fish will count. This is to encourage big fish tactics (high risk, high reward).

In a normal competition you'd spend the first part of the day making bag. Then you'd try to upgrade (cull) fish in a systematic way to grow your bag. But in this competition, you start the day in upgrade mode because your bag limit is one. And since only the top 3 fish will count anyway, you know that a 1kg fish will probably not help you at all. So you are immediately looking for 2kg+ fish, from early morning. There's no safety in first getting some average sized fish. But this doesn't mean you can't start small. For example, you can start small in order to locate numbers of fish. Once found, you can then target the bigger fish in that specific area. The easiest way to target bigger fish is to throw bigger lures. A big lure represents a big meal. It also helps to keep the dinks away. Some people also maintain that certain types of lures appeal to bigger fish, such as jigs or swim baits. If all this sounds daunting, just join us for a fun day on the water and weigh in your heaviest fish. You can still throw your drop shot or wacky worm!

Here are some interesting videos that explain the concept (second video not just about swim baits, despite the title):

We all keep track of our PB (Personal Best), for good reason. We like big bass. Here's a chance to hunt them in a competition format.

The competition is aimed at kick boats, kayaks, rubber ducks and small boats. To keep costs down and to keep this a friendly "proof of concept" competition, the entry fee for the competition will be R70. The organizers will not be taking a cut of the entry fees. All entry fees will go towards trophies for the top 3 anglers and what is left over will go towards cash prizes for the top 3 anglers. The more people who enter, the greater the cash prizes will be. We're also looking for prize sponsors. We'll see how that goes. We may also have some lucky draw prizes. We will launch from Eagle Waters. You'll need to pay their day visitor rates.

Here's the Facebook event with all the detailed information and rules:

For enquiries, please e-mail us at springbigbasschallenge@gmail.com or post on the Facebook page.

Thanks! We hope to see you there!

Sounds like fun.

However I don't know if I would put my legs in that pea soup for prolonged periods of time Wink

Nothing like this anywhere as far as I can tell. In the USA they have various kinds of big bass comps.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: The recent heat wave and algal bloom at Harties have caused concern among some of the anglers. We came up with a backup venue, Bronkhorstspruit dam, which has been fishing well lately. I phoned all the anglers who have entered the comp. Almost all of them would still attend the comp if it was at Harties, but most of them said they would actually prefer Bronkies now. And nobody minded a move to Bronkies. So to keep everyone as happy as possible, we will have the comp at Bronkies. The times remain the same. We'll launch from BAJADAM. Here are the rates:

R 20 per vehicle
R 40 per adult
R 60 per big engine boat
FREE for small engine boat (15hp or less) / canoe / kayak / kick boat / float tube

Also remember R 70 per angler for competition entry.

Please bring cash since they don't have a card machine!

BAJADAM is approximately 15 kilometres from Bronkhorstspruit, towards Delmas on the R42 road (S25°53.841', E28°42.621').
