Drop in Temperature

OK this is the first real sudden drop in temperature that we have had in KZN since last winter... for the first time the mercury dropped below the 12 degree mark since last year and I?m wondering what the effect will be on fishing... plus it looks like the colder weather is here to stay until late on Sunday. It will be quite strange packing jackets and warm clothing for tomorrow?s fishing trip!

Any changes we should make to our fishing technique this week-end?

Well this has all been wonderfully helpful so far... at least we can add two more fines for the Winter Tour! ;-)

Bryan went fishing this morning at Inanda and the fishing was very kak... he didn?t even get bag which is like a blank for him!

Hi Rob,

Personally I would try finesse or reaction type baits (such as a Zoom Trick Worm twitched every minute or so or a Rattle Trap worked with a jerking action to try and provoke a reaction bite), as i've noticed that the cold weather will slow the aggresive feeding nature of the bass and cause them to be sluggish.

I would also look for some sort of offshore struckture, as I believe that they tend to congregate there and "Park Off". If you think about it, when the weathers' this cold you don't wanna get up and make your own sarmie etc, you rather bribe the wife, so one should try to pass your lure right infront of its nose to get a strike.

The best way to land these "basstids" during cold weather is to slow the movement of the lure and make it easy for them to strike.

Yip it looks like wormie time for us tomorrow? but I also need to try my new Heddon Top Water lures as well as some new Tubes and also some Crayfish!

But I will be taking my warm jacket for the first time in a long time! ;-)

We had a cold spell here last week but it has warmed up again. Apperently Witbank is on fire at the moment. Wish I had my boat ready :-(

Remember that the water will cool down much slower than the air and it will take a good few days of cold weather to have any significant effect on the water temperature. The fishing slows down more due to barometric pressure than temperature, so fish as for a cold front.

Just for the record the crayfish lures didn?t work at all?. And neither did the top-water lures? but I only tried the Heddon torpedo? then I got to the tubes and I need someone to show me how to rig these things?

Are those the Ratfink lures, or are just just talking about the normal crawdad, crayfish plastics?

Ya the Ratfink ones? I had a good look at them today when preparing my rods for the next fishing session? they are pretty cheap and pretty well made?
