Spinnerbait advice required

On Saturday at TWK I was hit by a fish that snapped my spinner in two. One of the guys in the comp was there (I think it was Brandon) and he asked me what make of spinner was it? My answer was "Huh" :eusa_think:
I've got no idea what spinner it was, or for that matter what colour the blades or skirt was. To me a spinner is a spinner.

The point is - I am spinnerless, so I am going to Somerset West tomorrow to browse and buy a spinner or two - and I'm also looking to buy a top water popper and a Zara Spook.
To be honest - I'm not quite sure as to what I should be looking for so any advice will be welcome.

If u can speak to Plasticman/Malcom (Ol'Bigmouth). He has got the Hildebrandt Spinnerbaits for only R35. Forgive me if im wrong but that was the last price I paid.
Really good spinners and it would be cheaper than any spinner at Somerset Sports.
U could never go wrong buying an old faithfull Zara Spook!!

Thanks Donster - I think that's a good call as I've never been to his place.
I usually prefer to stay on my side of the mountain because I tend to go a bit ape :twisted: when I encounter taxis.

Hi Bombastic, yes it was me there chatting to you. firstly just a heads up, if you cast any bait against the bridge a few times it will eventually break on a fish. sorry to see you loose a fish and the bait there.
there are so many variants of spinnerbaits, but without punting a brand I could sum it up for you like this.
firstly buy three different colours. 1) golden shiner 2) white/chartreuse 3) white pearl. these are my 3 favourites
then two different blade combinations. 1) Colorado blade 2) willow leaf combos.
this should be ample to start off without getting into the technical stuff and you should be fine for starters. hope I make sense or you can pm me and I will gladly guide and explain more.

And while you are at it buy a dedicated spinner bait rod, another reel for it, a fish finder for you tube, etc, etc, and a few other items ... I am sure Malcolm wouldn't mind. I can think of a good make but I will rather share it with you a PM :eusa_shhh:

Thanks Brenden - You noted, I do bang the bridge quite a bit trying to land next to the pillars. Once I even hit a guy on a tractor on top of the bridge, luckily with Senco. (Now you burst my bubble :blue-cry: I thought it was a kicker but it was most likely a week spot in the spinner)
Navrik - I think I'll pass on the Lowrance for now until I can extend my extention lead. I am in line for a dedicated spinning rod, but to be honest, I don't like those coffee grinder spinning reels (old school rock and surf thinking).

I recently started throwing spinner baits, I can't believe what I have missed the last couple years. 2 months back we fished TWK and in the last hour of the day I decided to tie up a spinner bait. nothing much was happening for us throughout the day, so what the hell, couple casts later, bam a nice 2.5kg. I now have a dedicated rod for spinner baits. Even went and bought a few more at plasticman. The trailer hook really helps too.
The rod I'm using is a Falcon Bucoo 7f medium paired with a Quantum Kinetic 7.1.
10lb line, fluoro Sunline... Think a slower ratio reel would be better. I just reel slower.

Without a doubt most of my catches have been on spinner, but I've been leaving it at home on purpose to force myself to concentrate of working soft plastic jerk baits. I've learned a lot and am quite enjoying it, especially getting fighting frogs to come alive. I'm not having much joy with actually catching fish but then again TWK is a big dam when you are on a V Boat - I'm sure my new skills with plastics will pay off on smaller dams. (or maybe this weekend on the Breede)
Back to spinners - You can't go to a comp without a spinner in your bag so tomorrow, ahunting I shall go. Any recommendations on blades / colours/ make?

Can't really help in the blades, colours etc... Don't have enough experience and knowledge about them. Try getting a few different types. The white/chartreuse works for me. I don't go for blades that are to big.

As for plastics, that all I would fish up until a couple months back. I just loved the tap, nibbles, knock knock, tug on the line. But now I have realised after having a good chat with one of the pro staff on the site, that you really need to sum a area up quickly a throw a bait for the conditions and not just a plastic plastic plastic.

During a recent trip to Goedertrouw Rowan Bernstein on the second boat in our group managed to better his PB with a fish over 3.5kg on a spinner bait and 50lb braid. Imagine that fight!
