Fish Finder advice

Good day everyone.
Fishing has been awesome this winter but I feel like buying a fish finder.

Can anyone give me advise?

I looked at the echo 100 from garmin but honestly I don't know what to get > a cheaper one might be okay for the Kayak but might bore me after a while while a mid range one might do the trick but later on I will probably upgrade so I don't want to go to high price wise.

I love the side imaging stuff I see in the bass magazines but these units seems very pricey.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

I recon its easier to start out looking what will fit into your budget as opposed to finding what you like then discovering you dont have the budget.

You can get a down scanning unit from about R10k, side scanning a little more, normal sonar for about half that. So it really boils down to the size of your wallet.

Also, I take it you will be fishing off a kayak for the time being, so I'd think that GPS on the system will be pointless, which should bring the costs down even more.

Maybe tell us what your budget and fishing platform is, then the top guys could recommend something to suit.

I also recently was in the market for one under R1.5K for my kick boat.
I did a bit of comparison and what was important to me was screen size and resolution.
Most of the low cost ones were 4 level grey scale (meaning you get 4 shades of grey).

The Garmin echo 100 got 8, and got 20% more pixels than others, which beats any in that price range.

Also, only single scan, but you don't need dual scan in the depths we fish in.

Nearly bought it, but I got a deal on a secondhand colour one.

I have sold Raymarine Dragonfly with GPS, Chirp technology & Down scan units to guys on kick boats and they love them. But they are R10k as JFZ says, these are the most cost effective units offering you all that technology, the closest you can get to this in other makes is 35k.

Lucky...will need to work my arse off for one of those...or just win the Junior Nationals next year and get it as a prize(If it's still the prize) :blue-lol:
