Zara Spook

Hi all,

I have been fishing surface lures for quite some time. I have fished poppers, dying flutters, buzz baits, tiny torpedos and Zara Spook.

My best results by far is from the Zara Spook. The bigger the better. Fishing it slow with long pauses in between.

My question to you is as follows:

I get most of my hits either before I have moved the spook or as soon as I "walk" it once or twice and then pause, usually on the pause.

I fish structure, so it makes sense, but do you guys get the same reaction when fishing these lures.

Reason for asking is, that is seems a waste of time to carry one "walking" the spook if it wasn't hit near or at the structure.

I often fish this lure and have seen it being used extensively on TV (Bass university on ESPN) The answer to your question is no, don't stop fishing it if it has moved away from the structure. Bass will often follow the lure for a while before striking. Bass may also be hiding under the structure which may obscure their view of the surface near the structure, so as it gets pulled away it may come into view, luring the bass from under the structure and producing a wicked strike.

I feel more anglers don't give top water lures enough chance and never get to see and feel the rush of a strike on a top water lure. Keep it up and good luck.

That's right. Don't pause your spook, if you really want results you need to walk that dog all day. I'd love to fish with you guys for a day with a spook or a buzzbait. Have the balls to throw them from dusk till dawn where you know big fish are and it will totally change your outlook on these lures. If you know somebody who always catches big fish, they probably don't want you to hear this.

I agree with both styles. often a more subtle paused approach will bring fish out of the cover to investigate this dying thing that has invaded his territory. :twisted: I have had fish hit the Zara literally at my feet at the boat after following it for some way, there really is nothing like topwater fishing!!!

I am also a fan of the Zara Spook, it is my favourite top water bait after the popper.

My first fish from the surface was on a Zara, a baby to say the least. The ZSpook was probablly the same size as the bass. Bass really do have balls to want to eat something the same size as themselves.

There is a variation of the spook on the market called the Swayback Zara spook. It has a more pronounced action than the origional and is much easier to "walk the dog"

nothing beets the zara spook, large mouth and smallies take it .
i once caught a largie in bonnievale were the spook must have laid there for 20 seconds and the old girl just sucked it in, then in the same pool a smallie would hit it as it lands in the water

i have two, and havent caught squat yet, maybe because im not a big fan of topwater. I havent had much success.

But now with pig season approaching im gonna throw em. I still find it a liiiitle bit of a mission to get him missioning properly.

I see the tip of th day is to just cast and keep him coming back to you steadily. Not really stop start? Ami right. any tips??
