Hi Warren

I've never had a problem with safety at Shongweni. A lot of canoeists go for a quick paddle before work, so you'll probably never find yourself alone on the water.

Let us know how it goes!

No power boats allowed at Shongweni, as you all know, so unless you use a float tube or shall boat (you can hire a canoo at the dam) you cannot get to the better spots on the dam. The best is to drive as far as the road takes you on the right hand side of the dam, the road stop at the new tented camp area. Walk down the tented area and go as far right as you can. You will get to a fence. This is the only place, from the side, that I have caught any decent bass. As for the security......should be OK by South African standards.....Hope it helps

Yup, Msinsi it is, so the WildCard still works. In my opinion it is run much better than the other Msinsi dams I've visited. In fact, my WildCard has expired twice before, and each time it was the Shongweni guys who picked it up first. And Shongweni is the only place that I have been asked to produce my fishing licence (on numerous occasions), so make sure you have one that is valid, it only cost's around R45.00 for a year.

As far as fishing spots go, stick to the side of the dam opposite the dam wall, and work all the way towards the river inlet. The banks with the steep cliffs surround very deep water, and I've never had any luck there, nor have I heard of anyone else doing well there. Start off with a weightless dinger to get your confidence up, then take it from there. Also, a portable fishfinder is a must, even if it is just to check depth. Good luck!

What does a portable fish finder cost ? Think my wife will kick my ass when she finds out how much I have spent so far and how much I probably will end up spending. Too many hobbies not enough money to go around .Excuse the ignorance but what is a wild card ?
I was a bit scepticle about spending R 250 on membership for a web site I did not know anything about but so far it has been good.Might be an idea to have a short trial period for new people so they can see what they get before they pay!!

Entry level ones range between R600 and R1000, the more expensive ones have graphic LCD's to indicate structure, and the cheaper ones only display depth and basic fish id. I have seen them at places like Camp World and Outdoor World.

There are different wild cards available, but the one to look at is the River Cluster which gives you unlimited access to any Msinsi reserve in KZN, including Inanda, Nagle, Albert's, Shongweni and Hazelmere. A couples card for you and a fishing buddy/wife is around R250 and a singles card is about R160 per year. Check out http://www.msinsi.co.za/loyalty-card.php for more details.

What's nice is that it is also a rewards card that gives you cashback from different retail partners. So if you keep that in mind, you can get the card to pay for itself.

Are the entry level ones worth while or should you only look at the more expensive models . Dont think I will need anything to advanced, will more than likely need something small and portable.
What do most guys use ?

My 2 cents worth: I have the basic model, which is fine and does the job as I only use it for depth measurement - love it to bits. But there are times when I wish I had forked out the extra R400 for the graphics model. But then I think of all the lures I could buy instead.... Gees, I need to win the Lotto!

And in preferably needs to be the UK Lotto? because an Audi Q7, a 21? Ranger or Triton, a crap load of new rods and reels really eats into the SA Lotto. ;-)

It could if it was a R20 million special! I would have change over to build a holiday house at one of the local dams too! But it would make life a lot easier of I could nail a UK lotto of 7 million pounds? then I would have plenty of change left over.
