My boat project

Hi all.

So me and the misses recently bought a boat. I wanted a basic bassing platform but had to compromise with her and get a ski boat so she can wakeboard in between fishing. We got this old ski boat with trailer and 70hp Mariner motor at what we think was a bargain. Its not very pretty but hopefully I gets me to the fishing holes and back! Making it bassing friendly will be my winter project and hopefully I'll have it all in order for springtime.

It has a floatation certificate as well as a seaworthy certificate but no safety equipment so that will be part of the project getting all that in order and of course we will require skippers licenses. I plan to build a removable deck in the back from behind the seats to the transom and carpet that. Removable to have more space when skiing. I also plan to reinforce the bow and carpet that and add a fishing stool and trolling motor. And in time I will need to add a livewell so I can enter comps and the money trail down here.

I will be updating the progress on this post bit by bit as I go along to hopefully help others in future who look at doing something similar.I will glady accept any advice or tips and positive critisism. Wish me luck and lots of patience and hopefully business brings in the money to do all this?! :blue-rolleyes:

Out of pure curiosity, how does it have a seaworthy certificate but no equipment!!??
Also, have you got the original buoyancy certificate and was SAMSAA involved in any of this documentation? What is the buoyancy?.......I'm trying to help. :blue-neutral:

The chap who sold it to me kept the saftey equipment as he is buying a new boat. I do have the original COF certificate issued by SADSAA and buoyancy certificate from whoever installed the PU foam. The certificate states 60%.

I'm not sure if these documents need to be changed into my name or not?

Fair enough and 60% is sufficient whereas the prescribed 30% is ridiculous for cat R and they wont float!

Congrats on taking the plunge dreamfish!!

As mentioned before on other build up DIY projects, very important for you to consider weight distribution....
- Remember that for wakeboarding, you gonna need some "nose weight so look at where you gonna position fuel tank or batteries for electronics and sneaker.
- Lots of storage under that nose piece for your safety gear as well.
- possibly look at building a rod locker that extends under the nose maybe.
- I notice there is no ski pole on your boat, so consider fitting one to make pulling a skier out the water easier. This pole could double up as the vertical pole for your back pedestal seat...

I've got the same scenario of converting a speed boat to a bass platform but with the watersports capabilities as I have 11 yr old twin boyz that will want to also do the watersports thing as they get older... Have been thinking of various options including the removable back deck... material and weight are key considerations.
I'm not looking to do comps with my rig, so live wells etc are not going to factor into my design, but a nice cooler compartment is a must.
Will try figure out how to post pix and put some b4 and after pix up on the site...

Just a couple of suggestions....

The bold “initiated a survey” means an application for annual COF inspection by you, the owner. If you PM me your e-mail I will forward a blank Cat “R” application copy to you which counts for SAMSAA, SADSAA or any other authorised agency through whom you will do your annual survey.

I got side-tracked before I could finish my post so the ownership registration issue will be forthcoming.

You can contact the following person for the COF. When I spoke to Kobus last time he said he can give us a BFSA Discount if we get enough boats together every year. He is even prepared to come out to one of our BFSA MT's and survey a whole group of boats.

A little progress this weekend... Gave the boat a serious wash and solid buffing. Used a product called Starbrite, pricey but effective. Got rid of the oxidation and brought the original colour out nicely...

Re-carpeted the inside...still needs some trimming to finish it off neatly...
