Inanda Bass Club - Club Comp 11 March 2012

So this weekend we had our Inanda Bass Club Comp at Alberts. It was actually scheduled for the previous weekend but was cancelled due to bad weather. During the week we all kept a close eye on the weather hoping that it would be okay.

Saturday afternoon the boat was prepared and packed and and we had an early night.

Day of the Comp we were up at 04h00 and packed and hit the road. This being my first Club Comp I was really excited. I am really enjoying Inanda Bass Club. There are some seriously accomplished anglers in this Club and some real characters.

We arrived at around 05h45 with the start scheduled for 06h15. The weather was fine with a few scattered clouds. A quick catch up with Uncle Rob and Louis and then the Captains Meeting with the “Tournament Director” Ziggy and the Comp rules were explained. This was an individual Comp divided into two mini sessions with Cash and Prizes for biggest fish and heaviest bag. Three fish per angler in the morning and three fish for the afternoon session.

The boat numbers were then allocated and we were off. Gaynor and I decided that we would use the same pattern that we were relatively successful with a few weeks ago before the BETT fishing the deeper banks in the morning and then moving to the Ridge as it got warmer.

Gaynor was in Top Form as she reeled in the “IceBreaker “ and our biggest fish of the day. The pattern seemed very different to our last session and we only really caught onto this late in the first session. We also made the mistake of not weighing all our fish as I was concerned with penalties. Gaynor weighed in a healthy keeper of 880 grams for the morning Skipper - donut.

After a short break and weigh in and some discussion of tactics the second session began at 11h30.

First cast bang on! and another 700 grammer on a texas rigged Yamamoto Flappin Hog. Unfortunately the fish was gut hooked and worse off for wear and eventually died. After a few minutes we saw the fish turning and raced off to weigh it. We spent a lot of time trying to save the fish and proper fish care and management is something we realised we have to work on. We caught a few more dinks and at about 13h00 the wind picked up a bit and the bite got more aggressive from earlier tap taps to BANG HANG ONS and when we wanted to go to our deeper spots found a few people bunched up on them.

We went by Uncle Rob and Louis who were chilling and chatted for a short while and went off to check the Cliffs. The wind really picked up at about 14h00 and saw some weather moving in and decided to cut the afternoon a bit shorter. A real rough ride back to the weigh station and we called it a day.

For us it was great experience and a bit of a learning curve and eye opener at the same time.

Lessons learnt :

1. Be prepared – not just tackle etc but have a plan B (fishing plan) if plan A fails. ( I decided that I would fish our pattern from a few weeks back but didn’t think it through)
2. DON’T WASTE TIME in unproductive areas.
3. Organize your boat. ( I had my COF renewed and things were out of place).

Anyway a well run Club Comp that produced one or two nice fish. I was really impressed by our juniors Andrew and Andreas that caught a few nice fish. It was also good to bump into and finally meet Drew there who caught avery nice bag but only fished the first session.

A big thanks to the Club Organisers, particularly the weighmaster (his name eludes me) who had to endure some serious wind to keep the weigh station at the same co ordinates. To Wessie for making us feel so welcome and especially Uncle Rob and Louis for talking us through the experience and once again having us in stitches in no time and last but not least my Lady Lovely and fisherwoman extraordinaire who has been working so hard on her fishing lately and whipped me on the day making me so proud.

Albert Falls Mar 12
Inanda Bass Club had its compo on Sunday and the weatherman said rain… well the rain did eventually arrive but that was after we were on our way home… beautiful weather and the clouds took some time to get thick enough to cool things down so sunscreen, long sleeves, big hat and lots of water was the order of the day…



35 Anglers turned up for the compo and it was 3 fish each before 11:00 and then 3 fish each after 11:00. Louis and I rushed off to the shallows because that’s where the fish were for the BETT despite the heat that day… we managed one fish each on frog and the bite disappeared. I managed another keeper just before the first weigh-in… the fish was really tough once again…

After the break we headed off to the spots we found on the Ridge pre-fishing for BETT and slowly we managed a reasonable 3 fish bag each before the 3pm weigh-in… All our fish bar the two frog fish of the morning were caught on Kriet Tailed worms… we threw everything else as well but with no effect…


All my reels are now spooled with Seaguar AbrazX Fluorocarbon and I can’t wait for a really big fish to test it because it has been performing really well (12lb) with durability and no line snaps… the Palomar knot is ideal for the 12lb.


After the compo there was a braai compliments of the club but unfortunately we had prior engagements so couldn’t stay… just as well because my boats carpets were scrubbed and clean and the boat was cleaner than the day I got it and the rain came down in buckets in Hillcrest just after 4pm and thankfully the boat was safely tucked in bed in her Man Cave!

Shane got the biggest fish of the compo and here are the full results of the bags…
