Bass Newbie

Hi Guys

I've recently started out with bass fishing and a 2.5kg catch on Boxing Day seems to have gotten me hooked. After browsing through the forums it seems I am going to learn a helleva lot here.

I've had success with flukes; landed 2 x 1kg this weekend but did on get anything on the crankbaits in my tackle box.
I'm off to a resort in cullinan on Friday where I'm told the river holds some bass.
Bronkhorstspruit is also near so does anyone have any advice on what to use?

Also where can I get tackle from at the best prices?

You are quite correct in your observation "I'm going to learn a hellavalot from this site...." There are guyz here with loads and loads of experience and advice who are willing to care and share and try help make your next trip out on the water a better one.

Firstly, could you please update your details so that everyone knows where you're from? Much easier for guys to help out with advice and tips if we all know where you from etc....

To echo Crafty's questions, you will learn from the site that there is never too much info... One needs to be specific on what you were using and details of the location. Choosing to throw a crank for instance is simply tying a crank on a rod, casting and hoping for the best.... Wrong.... certain lures work best with certain depths and line choices and reel options and water clarity and and and.... :blue-lol: I think you get my point.... hehehe...

So ja, for the guys to help you, give us more info to work with to give you the best advice based on specific info....

Was using a lime green crank with a lip mostly
Fished in area called Normandien which is bout 30km out of Newcastle. Most of the spots were private dams but also had some luck at Chelmsford dam
The waters were murky and brown at some spots and sparkling clear at others, most fish were caught in the brown areas.

I am no pro, but I will try and help you with what I have found to work.
For me personally in brown or murky water I would stick to Natural Colors. Brown / darker baitfish colors , Bream Silver or even black. Watermelon with Red / Blue or Black Flakes or Junebug Color if you are using plastics. But always remember there is a difference between murky / brown/ dark water and Dirty water.
I found in dirty water it helps to use Funky circus colors (like retro lime green) or plain white. I remember a color scheme called Electric Chicken Red Tail for flukes that used to be awesome for dirty water.

If the Crank has a small lip it is a shallow runner and will obviously do better in shallower Swim like next to a shallow reed line, Shallow Structures, Rocks , Rock Beds etc. If you are unsure of which colors to use start with natural colors first and work your way through. Imitating the local baitfish or feed is the easiest way to start if you are unsure.

If you are fishing deeper water , a crank with a larger lip, a sinking , suspending or a rattle trap which is a lipless sinking crank should be used. A good indication of water depth for bank anglers is a wightless fluke cast out and watch the line, you will see when it hits the bottom when the line goes slack. If your deep running crank hits obsiticles every now and then while retrieving dont worry, this is a good sign, bouncing a crank off rocks and structure often produce bites, but you also run the risk of snaggin and losing the lure. If it is running too deep and collecting muck , try making your retrieve a little slower. Running the crank just above the bed is ideal.

Cranking is a little different than using plastics, often the bite comes very quick and hits you off guard. Be Ready to strike when he hits it!
