Have any of you guys fished Cragie Burn dam recently.
The last time I fished there was a year ago and the dam was fishing terribly but It has been an awesome dam in the past.
If you've been up there in last month or two please give us some info.
Thanks

Oli it's between Mooi River and Greytown, just over 2 hours if I remember correctly.
It's a small dam, about the size of Hazelmere. It used to have lots of 3kg size fish in it, but about a year and a half ago some clown was caught spearfishing in the dam. Apparently his bakkie was full of bass (he was selling the bass to suppliment his income). I also think a lot of the bass make their way into the local curry pots.

This dam also has a small population of small mouth, I havn't caught one yet but I did see some come out in a Cast 4 Cash comp last year.

the comp we fished there last year had 20 boats (40 anglers) and only 10 fish were weighed in, we won the comp with 1 fish, ok it did weigh 3.68kg. the second comp we caught 1 fish of 800g and finished 2nd, so I wouldn't suggest rushing up there unless we get some good feedback. Cry

Let's hope someone's got some good news :?:

Hi Shannon,

We fished craigieburn about 2 months ago on our way to our divisional at Albert Falls. We caught plenty of fish ...around 20 each (with a few smallmouths thrown in for good measure)! The fish were not huge ..all around 500 - 800g ...but we did see some nice fish moving along the edges of the weed beds... suggest trying near the wall on the left of the rope along the bank ...flukes and senkos were defenitly the ticket (green pumkin blue flake, watermelon purple and Mardi Gras). Other spots to try ... If lookng at the dam wall there are nice weed banks on the right bank (the point there produced the biggest for the day +-1.5kg). The water when we were there was crystal clear ..so be prepared to scale down... possibly to 10lbs and finesse.

Give it a bash its an awsome little dam with little pressure.

Tight Lines!

Hey guys thanks for the responses, it looks like it's time to pay the dam a visit again.

Fab, Goedetrouw is always at the top of my list, the problem is you always have to take a car gaurd with.
I specifically want to go to Cragie Burn to try catch a Small mouth, I've never caught one and I need to see what the fuss is all about.

Thanks Guys

Hiya Fab,

Arthur (my brother-in-law), Richard and I are in like Flint for a trip to Goedertrouw! I suggest we go for 2 days and one night and sleep over there! When did you have in mind? December sometime!

Fab you tell me when you're going and I'll be there.
There's a 5kg + Hawg that's bust me up twice there and I'm gonna get her.

Rob you will have to make sure you organise properly if you are planning on staying overnight. As it is you have to take your own car guard just for a day visit.
There used to be a lodge there with floating chalets and the works, but the local wildlife decided they weren't getting a big enough cut, so they took an affirmative reposession approach and basically just destroyed the whole place. The floating chalets are still there but they are empty and pretty run down.

Goedetrouw was apparently the first dam in SA to be stocked with Florida strain large mouth (sometime during the 70's) So you can imagine the size of fish in there. One of our club members has got a 24kg 5 fish bag out of there, so start drooling now 8O

Shannon? I have fished Goedertrouw once before? my very first cast for cash competition? and it was our first BLANK? but knowing what I know now I want to go back and punish those little green fish? especially the big ones that I now realise suck the bait in and move off gently!

I know there is a decent B&B nearby and I thought I would take my gardener with so he can play car guard during the day when we are on the dam! Any recommendations on B&B?s close by?
