Rust de Winter is one of South Africa's premier bassing destinations. From Pretoria, take the N1 north. Take the Hammanskraal offramp and turn right at the stop sign. Cross the highway and turn left onto the tar road. After about 25km, a t junction is reached. Turn right and drive untill the sign for the dam and turn right into the dirt road. The gate is open from 6 till 6.
There is a slipway but parking for tow vehicles and trailers can be a problem. There are two basic ablution blocks and plenty of camping spots, but no other facilities.
The bass population has been subjected to increasing fishing pressure, and fishing can vary from red hot to stone dead. Stucture is mainly water plants (extensive grass flats) and rock.
Security if fair and I have never had a problem.
The entry fees are a bit steep (R 145 for 2 adults with a boat for a day of fishing) but the dam is worth the money.
