I see from the current Survey that we have at least 5 members with Bass between 4 & 5 Kg?s and then one over 5kg?s so far? I think it?s time to tell their stories again in this forum? you may have told the story before but we would love to read it again? Please tell us where you caught it, how you caught it, what lure you used, the depth, the weather conditions and any other snippets you care to share. Please... pretty please.

This is not an easy story to tell, I wish there was more finesse and style, but alas... robfisher:- the spot where you took the photo of me with my 4kg is exactly the spot where I caught my PB(5.38kg). I wasn't even at the dam to fish, I was trying out a little second hand auxillary motor I had just bought. After getting half the jerry can of fuel on my hands, boat carpet and tackle, 8O I put a deep diver crank :wink: in the water to see if it would slow the boat down at all. 15 seconds later the rod was nearly ripped out of my hands as the monster hit it :!: Oh yes, did I mention I was using unleaded with a 50:1 mix (I think it was Shell)

There's not a lot to learn here, other than, "right place right time". And a crazy bass that likes the smell of pre-mix unleaded :?:

after some research on when the best time for the lunkers would be is from mid july to 1st week august..april also a good time,but wouldnt wanna work too much to get some big fish,also the mosquitoes are quite deadly!!
when we were there justin booth showed us a pic that he took of a fish that he reckon would wheigh over 6kg....unfortunately he didnt have a scale to wheigh it,but it was a monster!!!

My pb is a 4,7kg pig caught in Heyshope dam in 1993 over the easter weekend.The fishing was slow only a few fish came out in the first two days we were there, we had steaming hot no wind days.We fished the timber the weedy bays ,drop offs and the dam wall with no real success.On the third day we saw clouds moving in and we prepared ourselves for a highveld thunder storm we rushed back to the camp site as the dam was turning into the perfect storm with some realy nasty waves.

The storm lasted about an hour and a calmness came over the dam,we hit the water as fast as we could and rushed to a place called Fergies ragged cliffs this place was amazing rocky cliffs running into about 20 feet of water with weed banks and bullrushes and a good amount of lillies.

My first cast was with a texas rigged berkley power worm tiquila sunrise was the colour as i recall.I had a bit of an overwind and while i was sorting this my worm was sinking overwind sorted i started reeling in only to find that my worm was stuck on a log or rock of some sort i pulled back and the log/rock pulled back just as hard i set the hook and about 15 minutes later i lipped my biggest bass to date a 4,7kg pig.The fish came on the bite and we landed a few good fish between the 1 and 2 kg mark for about two hours after the storm.

The thing i learnt out of this is that a thunder storm sometimes gets them to go on the bite.

Lekker PB Story Roy? so you have been fishing for a few years then? ;-) And I think the lesson here is even when fishing is tough you persevere because the pig can come out of the blue!

Well, my pb was at Alberts..... I lost an absolute hawg, which might have been the same fish.... but I'll tell you the story from the beginning.... King Dinger style!!!

There we were..... 1000 to 1.... and boy did that one kak!!!! Oooops, wrong story....

It was the beginning of February, the 5th if I remember correctly 2000. I had launched my boat at about 6am with mommy on the boat with me... We headed straight out from Notuli camp sites and fished the trees on the left close to the entrance that leads to the river entrance. After roughly 3 hrs of fishing and "fone-call" to show for it, I told my wife that maybe we should go pay for our accomodation, have breakfast and then come back out a little later....

Not like we were missing any awesome fishing or what what.....

So we packed the rods cranked the motor and headed for the campsites.... The water level was high and I actually beached the boat on the grass as the banks were flooded...

As I got out the boat, I noticed chases in the shallows.... So I told mommy to go start breakfast as I was going to have a couple of throws.....

Out came the Daiwa Heartland 7' MH with Daiwa reel and 14 pound line, and a cheap popper.... cost me R25.... Good deal in hind-site.... Let rip with first and second cast... nutting...

Then let rip with the third cast and pop pop pop wait retrieve..... Next minute, big splash and swirl and my rod buckled.... At this point, I must emphasise that I hadn't caught a bass that kicked my a$$.... All the bass I had caught was a matter of set the hook, hold pressure, force the fish to the surface and fight him back to me....

So there I was, forcing pressure and waiting for Mr Bucket mouth to surface... Next thing I knew, I found myself having to hold onto my rod for dear life as it was being pulled out my hands as my drag was set tight.... As i tried to release the drag..... Slack..... Lost him.....

Man oh man did some choice words follow that little episode..... Threw over and over and over.... nutting...... Man I was stunned and vibrating like..... well u guys know what....lmao...

I put my rod back on my boat and made my way back to the tent.... My wife thought I was a blithering idiot as I was not making any sense.... Between the choice words and the broken explanation of what had just happened, she couldn't make out what the *^&$#$& I was saying.... So we got into the car and made our way to the offices to pay for our accomodation. On route, I told my wife that when we get back, she was to start breakfast as that bastasrd fish was mine and I was going back for him!!!!

Paid up and went back to camp... Kissed mommy and told her I'd be right back....

Went back to my beached boat, took the same rig and inspected the lure... I had straightened my hook.... That's how I lost him.... Long nose pliers out, returned the hook to its natural shape and let rip with the first cast..... nutting.... Let rip with the second cast..... nutting..... BUT.... to my right, big splash and swirl..... Quickly wound in my lure and let it rip about 2meters past the swirl.... pop pop pop.... SMASH!!!!!

This time drag was right.... The fish started peeling line off my reel in short sharp bursts then beeeeg splash.... Back down deep and off to the left.... I could feel my line snagging on the submerged bushes and prayed my line would hold... Held the rod up high to try keep out of the bushes and after a nice fight, had the fish at my feet!!!!

Grabbed the net out my "beached boat" and coaxed the beaut into it... My heart was pounding and ppl from the campsite were watching as I grabbed the bottom lip of the bucket mouth and lifted him out the water and net!!! Two youngsters came hauling a$$ towards me howling and cheering while others from the campsites were shouting "LUNCH LUNCH!!!"

The 2 youngsters held the fish in the net for me as I hauled a$$ to go fetch my wife!!! She came down and I borrowed a scale on my way back down to the water... 4KGS!!!! Not too shabby Nige... Except I'm not Nige.... lmao.....

Unfortunately i had to put up with a bit of verbal abuse as the "LUNCH" brigade watched me gently revive the fish and watch him glide off slowly back into the depths to live to fight another day!!!!

Now this was a lekker story Fab old buddy and just what I was looking for? lessons to be learnt and the emotions of the fight shared? I feel a lot closer to you now.

Date Sometime September 1996
Location: Private dam Belfast.

I was sixteen years old. My buddy and i decided that we would devote an entire day to fishing our neighbours dam. Before first light we packed what little lures we had and asked my dad if he would go drop us. We arrived at the dam wearing most of our warm clothes ( for those who don't know Belfast...it's freezing up there). We started fishing and it was made crystal clear that there would be no distractions as i lit the much anticipated first cigarette of the packet with the very last match of the box....bummer

Cigarettes were soon forgotten as we hooked into fish after fish after fish!! Fish of 1-2kgs were taken regularly. We lost count by eleven and went on strong with a handfull of plastic worms, two cranks and a tazmanian devil ( you still remember them? ). We quickly ran out of plastics so we used the torn up worms wacky style ( not even knowing it was called that mind you ) and still landed the fish. When the worms were realy vrot we used half worms and later quarters, there was no stopping the bite.

When the sun was getting low i switched to a black and silver broken back rapala. A couple of casts a couple of fish. Another routine cast another routine bite, i set the hook and it felt like i hit a log. My El 'cheapo rod bent in half and my lucky packet reel sang a tune i never heard before. For a split second i stood there numb not registering, i was quikly out of it and was having the fight of my life...then she breached...i had what hunters would refer to as "bok koors"... my heart was pumping so fast and the huge amount of adrenalin that was pumpin through my veins had me shakin for 5 minutes after i landed my 4.1kg pig.

We caught an estimated 160 odd fish that day.thruth be told i'll trade all the fish i caught this year if i can get one more of those fat ladies, well she has to be at least 5kg's plus :twisted:

Belfast is damn cold, I know that place to good, my brother stays there.

Some nice fishing you had going there, I would not mind having a day like that.
