All this encouragement just makes me want to go and fire up the sander - I suppose the neighbours might complain at this time of the morning :blue-doubt:

August - Yes the transom is strengthened with extra layers of overlapping fibreglass, all 4 stringers are glassed to the transom to make transom knee joints. The transom has an outboard clamping board glassed to it to make it 50mm thick.
I still have to install the motorwell supports which add additional transom support and the deck gets glued to the transom for more support.
The boat will have a typical bass boat type deck layout.
I'll take some photos of the transom and post them when I flip it back over.

Mark - on the timing I'm not sure, I haven't kept a record, but I'm pretty sure that I am way over 200 hours of actual building time.
For costs, it's not really much cheaper, if you take your hours into account it's actually way more expensive.
So far this is what I've spent:
Marine Ply - R6150
Resin and Glass - R11 000
Extra lumber (solid wood) - R1000
Consumables (sand paper, brushes, roller, etc) - R1000
Accessories (Pumps, timers, switches, plumbing, etc) - R3000
Paint - R2500

Still need to spend:
Trailer - R12- R15 000
Jack Plate - R3500
Steering (non feedback) - R2500
Trolling Motor - R10 000
batteries - R3000
Sounders - R10 000
Outboard - +_R80 000 (depends on which motor).

The main difference for me is that I can spend the money when I have it, that way when the boat is finished I own it and not the bank. It's just a bit of delayed satisfaction and the boat will be custom built to my requirements :blue-biggrin: :blue-cool:

Probably the biggest 'balsa' wood model you would ever build in your life. :blue-lol: (I used to build and fly slope gliders. Perhaps you know Dave Greer that lives your part of the woods?)

I've been debating on how to approach a project I'm planning to do and one of the ideas I got is to use plywood and fibreglass. And looking at your project might have just tipped the scale in that direction.

If you don't mind, I have some questions :
I've always heard about marine ply wood, but what exactly is it? What makes it different from normal ply wood? (And for the CT guys: Where can I buy it?) I've used ply wood many times before, so I know what that is.

What is the sheet size and thickness you use and what is the cost per sheet?

Can you give a step by step the procedure of preparing your hull and laying up the fibreglass, resin, etc. till finish?
What brand of products did you use and where do you buy them (AMT perhaps?)

Dave Greer - No afraid not, I wasn't into it long. I did it is a way to keep my mind off fishing when I had to sell my boat, but it just couldn't replace my little green friends. :blue-biggrin:

Biggest project yet - That's no lie :blue-shock:

Marine Ply has the following differences from normal ply wood
The glue used to laminate the sheets together is water proof.
Marine uses either Meranti or Okume cover sheets (normally Meranti), normal ply uses pine which has voids and knots in it making weakspots.
When you buy Marine Ply you must stipulate Marine Ply - Grade BS1088 (BS = British Standard). This is the highest standard you get.

Sheet sizes are 2440 x 1220mm.
Thickness varies depending on which part of the boat you are building, Hull panels in 6mm, stringers, bulkheads, sole and decks are 9mm, transom is 3 layers of 12mm.
6mm - R200 per sheet
9mm - R400 per sheet
12mm - R580 per sheet.
Those are rough prices I can't remember exactly.

Resin and Fibreglass - Yes AMT.

Just something to point out - These plans are sold with the right to build 1 boat.
They are copyrighted so no one may use the plans to build and sell boats off the plans unless otherwise authorised by the designer. And yes it will cost a lot more.
This building method would not be conducive to major production anyway, just way to expensive and time consuming. :blue-wink:
