Mercury Poisoning at Inanda

My wife heard a snippet of info on a news bulletin about the fact that people have been warned not to eat fish from Inanda Dam due to high levels of Mercury poisoning found in the fish... anyone have any details?

Nope, no details on this Rob, but last week in PMB, the Witness newspaper headlines had one that read, "KZN Rivers Of Filth"

Have you seen what the water looks like around donkey bay? It looks almost brackish, like a lagoon does. Make a black cup of tea, and you have an idea what it looks like.... I have never seen it that colour before.

We need some SERIOUS rain to flush these systems, but obviously that means the extreme lower parts of Umgeni will be completely rotten for a while....

When I was fishing in Canada, I received a daily report on the mercury content of the lakes and the rivers. It is bad out there. Factories are the culprits and I believe money is paid to Kwazulu-Natal kofficials to turn a blind eye. Note the spelling.

CBC, spot on. Cato Ridge has a few factories that have had both environmental issues and labour issues, yet these things just dissolve into oblivion and no action is taken. I would not be surprised if it's one of these factories AGAIN :blue-rolleyes:

"Mercury Poisoning" mmmm now that sounds like something Vaalboy's got! lol :blue-badgrin: especially with the new EFI fitted...

Heavy metals were the main culprits when the fish died by the tonnes in Loskop last year. Sorry to hear that Inanda is going down the same road!

Have you guys spotted and dead fish floating around yet. It starts in the upper reaches, the mud becomes sludge that looks like a boling pot...yuck

well if there is mercury poisoning there maybe the illegal netters might cut down on the amount of fish they taking out of inanda , if you fish during the week when dam is quiet take care of not getting your outbaord tangled

Is there an Environmental Organisation or authorities that we as Bassers can contact and express our concern / disapproval. Commenting on this site is great to inform each other , but unfortunately that is where it will stay.

Normally that dark brown "black cup of tea" stain to the water is what is known as Tannin, it is caused by the rotting of vegetation, unfortunately in Inanda's case I doubt that is the cause
