We decided to have our club comp (Slip-Weigh) at Goedertrouw… like we needed another excuse to head out to the Lunker Dam… I was so amped that once again I woke up before my alarm went off at 03:00 and picked up Howie just before 04:00 and we were on our way… My one tyre has a slow leak so we stopped at the Tandi Garage for air, petrol and coffee…

We arrived at the dam at around 06:00 and launched and waited for the rest of the guys… that stinking slip weigh is a nightmare and it took ages to get everyone into the water before we had a brief captains meeting on the water and then headed out in all directions… I headed straight for the spot that produced the goods for me last time and sent the Yamamoto Creature Bait (Gold Flake which you can’t find anywhere in Durban anymore) to the edge of the cliff and held on tight… I held on tight some more… and then some more… nothing… zippo…. Bugger all… there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the sun was already beating down and Howie had already warned me of how difficult the dam can be in conditions like this… so I tried the creature bait for a while with no result… then I tried my new Jig that did so much damage the other day at Inanda and did get a really good take but I was fast asleep or lighting a smoke or something… and missed it completely… We left the spot empty handed and went to one of the bays near Ipiva with the houseboats in them and had a go there… it was pretty slow but eventually Howie got a 1,5kg to put into the livewell… shortly after that he got another one and this time it was a 2,2kg specimen… I still had diddly squat to show for the early morning and long drive and I wasn’t happy… then Norkie phoned for an update and suggested we try the main lake points… so we headed back to the slip-weigh area and started to work the points… by now I had switched from everything gold flake to a Watermelon Creature Bait with red flakes… first cast onto the point and I felt a very small tap and gave it horns… it didn’t feel that big but Howie grabbed the net and I thought he was just pulling the piss… but he had seen it swirl and knew it was a decent fish… only once I got the fish closer to the boat did it give me a rev and stripped line quite a few times… eventually (it felt like ages) I got it close enough for Howie to net it… 2,93kg’s…

We continued to work the points because at least we were getting the odd nibble… a short while later I got another decent fish which weighed in at 2,2kg’s… by now we were only going for a big fish because we decided to just do a big fish compo because there is nowhere to really have a weigh station and the fish are too big in that dam to try and keep 5 fish each in the live wells… and Eddie had nailed a 4,4kg pig on a spinner bait!

We stuck it out until 14:00 and had had enough of the wind which had come up and been irritating us for some time and most of the club members had left the dam because the fishing was slow or they wanted to watch the Sharks moer the Lions… just before we packed up Howie landed another nice fish of 2,23kg’s… so while it felt like a really slow day at the office we managed a bag of 11kg’s!

All my fish were caught on a Creature Bait Red Flake and Howie got his on Brush Hog (Gold Flake) and Stretch 40’s Red Flake.

All in all a fairly good day, as rob said, this dam seems to be tough when the weather is good!"£$% I think drew got a 3,3kg and some other good ones, and there were a couple more over 2kg, not really the result we wanted for the club,( I know this sounds ungrateful, but we wanted the guys to havea cracker,I think we may have left it a bit late, as a couple of our fish had spawned) but fun none the less. 11kg Bag :blue-cool: not bad Not bad AT all :blue-badgrin: At least you guys had a productive day And your team WON Man I wish our dams were that productive, What are you guys feeding the fish on the side to get them that BIG hee hee.
I once visited a Trout hatchery and a handfull of pellets thrown over the water would cause the water to "BOIL"

And just a note to all the Slip-weigh whoosies that ran away too soon because of the wind or the slow fishing or because of the rugby… bring extra cash to the next meeting! :blue-biggrin:

Nice fish Rob, that's one of the healthiest fish I've seen in a while, even after spawning she's got a nice round shape.

I really need to go to Goedetrouw again. :blue-cry:

The thing I like most with that dam is the anticipation you just know that every bite could produce a good fish , you just dont get that from any other dam that I have fished before !!

I do believe there is another full moon on Tuesday i guess I will have to clear my diary !!! :blue-biggrin: :blue-badgrin:

Yip that didn’t quite come across right… I love that dam for the big fish story and you are right… every single small nibble can be a PIG! I just want to do that dam when it’s overcast with no wind! I would say that that would as close to perfection that exists!

Did you guys catch any rats[ 1kg ] in between the bigger fish ??

Yip we did…. We got about 5 rats between 500g and a kg.

Yip we were snivelling a little… spoilt brats we are… but I guess if you fish all the big dams every single weekend in the best months of the year you are gonna catch the odd 2kg fishie… and bigger…and may I just say at this point that ALL the fish were caught on 13lb line and light Cumara rods with Steez reels… even at Albert Falls right in the trees… apart from my awesome day at Goedertrouw a few weeks ago I have to rate my Jig fishing at Inanda for an hour or so last Sunday as one of my best this year! Almost as exciting when I had that awesome 20 minutes with a Spook Junior at Inanda a few months ago… actually this last year with Howie has been an awesome year for learning and a fun point of view!

Since giving up worrying about politics and what the odd person thinks and says and concentrating on learning and having fun I have had a really great few months on the water! I am really looking forward to the 2009 season and will be fishing the ESA and BETT compos as well as the big comps like Inanda Classic and Albert Falls Tournament… and the Midmar Two Man challenge… oh yes and the SABAA Charity Classic in December!

Indeed, the weather for our club fish off was not the best for Goedetrouw, and when I boated my first fish that was a whopper of about 350g I was not very happy to have caught the smallest fish I have ever seen at Phobane :blue-cry: Nevertheless, we carried on, and started boating a few decent fish from 1,2 to 1,9kgs.
Charles, my boat partner for the day, lost an absolute behemoth of a fish !! It jumped less than 5m from the back of the boat and had Charles quite unsettled for sometime after seeing that monster launch out the water and throw the hook. Shortly after that I boated a 3,3kg fish that game me a serious working over and was very reluctant to hop on board for a quick photo :blue-lol: Things went quiet on that spot so we relocated and decided to return later as between Charles's fish and my 3,3 we had created some chaos there. We ran to another spot and got squat, so returned to our honey hole again, but only managed a few fish in the 1-1,2kg bracket. Louis joined us for a chat, and I lost another fish that I didn't see, but certainly had a lot of weight to it as it gave two huge surges for the deep.
The small fish are very fat, but the larger ones are certainly post spawn and are very thin, but despite this they still give you horns. all our fish were caught on watermelon red and watermelon gold brush hogs and Charles lost his monster on a motor oil gold fleck Damiki soft jerkbait.
