Same exercise that I did with Gauteng, I'm looking for members suggestions for the top 3 bassing waters in KZN. Also best time of the year to fish, I'm hoping to be up that way with boat later this year and am looking to plan my trip so that I don't spend time at unproductive waters. I'm also taking into consideration the accommodation facilities (camping, self catering?) and of course security.

I'm thinking:

1). Albert Falls
2). Inanda - maybe dodgy camping there?
3). Craigie Burn (smallies)

What about Midmar, Wagendrift, Goedertrouw?

Ok, I can see this reply upsetting a few people.

Wagendrift is a decent venue. It's quite small and can be very productive, but it's a spur of the moment dam. Planning a trip there could be disappointing as overnight rain makes that dam ridiculously dirty.

Craigieburn I cannot comment on as I last went there 5 years ago. Alberts is always a good bet for decent fish. Inanda is a better venue for lots of small fish. Midmar is great for skiing :blue-razz:

If I were you, and making that huge journey, I'd take N1 from CT then head to PMB via Bloem. First stop would be Craigieburn or Wagendrift if you wish, then on to Alberts. From there I'd short cut it through Greytown straight up to Goedetrouw. From Goedetrouw I'd take the N2 to GP and stop off at Jozini for a bit of Tiger Fishing en route to GP, and if you're really into the whole fishing trip thing, I'd even visit Swaziland on the way to GP before heading back down the N1 going home.

Note, I skipped Inanda :blue-shock: There is no need to worry about camping at Inanda. If you wish, there are plenty B&B's within 40 mins of the dam. If you do want to visit Inanda, you do that after Alberts, and then head towards the coast and up the N2 to Goedetrouw.

The exact time of the visit would help, as Inanda and Goedetrouw are normally the first dams to show signs of the spawn, and fishing at Inanda then can be a lot of fun, and Goedetrouw always holds the promise of a few +3kg fish and a good chance of a 4kg model.

Bassassin, try and give us dates and we'll fine tune this itinerary for you.

Thanks Drew, I'm thinking probably September.

It's either N1 North to Gauteng, then Mpumalanga (Tzaneen Dam and any others that are recommended), Swaziland (Maguga), then down to KZN, Eastern Cape and home. Or the other way round, heading up the coast and down the N1, haven't quite decided yet.

The idea of some Tiger fishing at Jozini sounds like a very good plan.

Thanks for any help/advice.

1) Inanda (it must be the most forgiving dam)
2) Albert Falls (quallity of fish)
3) Midmar (if you can crack it you can fish anywhere)

Mmmmm..... I'm with Drew on this one....
If you gonna do a trip of this magnitude and coming to KZN, and u don't include Goedertrou on your "PRIORITY, DEFINITELY HAVE TO!!" list, well then you seriously have to have your head read!!!!
Sure the going gets tough from time to time there, but when you do set the hook on the foooshies in that dam, the likelihood you're going to set the hook into a HAWG are rather good!!!! :eusa_drool:

For quality fooooshies, Goedies is the place to go..... I'm there this weekend for saturday and sunday!!!! Woooohooooo..... Can't wait!!! :eusa_drool:

1 Inanda Dam – You have to play on this dam… she is awesome.
2 Albert Falls – This one can work and the fish tend to be bigger.
3 Goedertrouw – Massive potential… gonna go and try it our real soon!

I hate to say it but...

1. Inanda - your best chance of having a good time, plenty of nice fish around, you just have to catch them so if something isn 't working, try something else, the fish are there just laughing at your bait.

2. Alberts - ditto, but although the fish seem to be more fussy, the average size seems to be bigger.

3. Goedetrou - relatively unexplored territory from a BFSA perspective, but an impressive body of water that is situated up the north coast, meaning warmer average temperature year-round, meaning more feeding time etc. etc. meaning monster bass!

But I still wouldn't write off Craigieburn (because Neels and Warren say so), Midmar (believe it or not I have done ok there before, and lets not forget the SA record...), Shongweni (even though the clubhouse burned down) and Nagle (although I haven't done well there for over a year).

And not to mention the South Coast! KZN really is a bassing mecca!

If you don't already live here, move! :blue-biggrin:
