OK, so I am opening myself up to a little ridicule as I have done something that may be deemed as unthinkable.

My son came across what he thought was a bargain and bought me two Pioneer 7' medium heavy rods as a gift. Now I am happy to use any rod and would never look a gift horse in the mouth. So I head off to my local fishing shop and start to look at reels. I get to play with a few reels and keeping in mind that I have a limited budget, I am capped at R1000.00  The options in this price range are not bad at all and includes Abu, Okuma, Shimano and a few names that I am not aware of but that are not necessarily bad quality. I finally end up with two. The Shimano and a reel called Banax. Now the strange thing is that although my head was screaming Shimano, I ultimately chose the Banax Elan CS 108.

Now what did I do that is unforgivable?
I gave one rod away to my wife.
But in my defense, it was part of a deal to get me in the door of the fishing shop.
She pared her rod off with a Cull-em Axis spin cast reel.

Was I wrong not to have taken the Shimano?

Glad to see you're burning cash into the big black hole of bass fishing. 

Ok, my opinion on the specific reels dont count as I'm a Lews supporter. But, in the entry to mid level range of reels there are a bunch of brands out there that are probably all very equal to each other in quality and life expectancy. So you probably did the right choice in the purchases you did. I guess you know how to service your own reels, or at least lube them? If yes, then pop the reels you just purchased open, give them a nice lube service and you'll find they will run for ages. I always found entry level reels had too much "cheap" grease in them and a simple clean and proper lube made them work a treat. In fact I still have a few Shimano's in the cupboard that I keep for rainy days that fall into this category. 

You'll see - as time goes on - you'll become more brand specific and start spec'ing rods and reels to certain set ups. It's potentially costly but part of the evolution

Sadly for you, it will always cost you twice the price
