Morning gents and ladys.

I was wondering if anyone could help a brother out.Iv just recently moved from fish hoek to sumerset west and i used to stay in stellys as a kid.i used to drive through hellshoogte alot to visit my old man and would always look at Idas vally dam and dream of fishing it,but never got the chance.My recent googeling has lead me to believe that its not the safest of places to fish :blue-cry: :eusa_boohoo: .My question is has anyone recently fished there ?and if so would it be alright for a 2man mission :question: And if not where are there any nice spots to try out.i hear there is a spot at techno park as well,any insight on that would be great

Not too sure about Idas valley. The dams in techno park are overgrown with lily pads and reeds and almost impossible to fish. If you are staying in somerset west check out ongegund farm on the old sir lowries pass road. Or make a mission through to Le Bonheur croc farm outside paarl. We went there yesterday, lost a keeper and then we collectively landed over a 100 small fish.

will definatly give the croc farm a try.Have been to ongegund and had some good fun on the fly there.And been to bottleray.What are the prices like at the croc farm ?and you say techno park is pointless?pitty i really wanted to go have a look im staying like 5 minutes away

Technopark has nice fish. Lots of lillies though. Unfortunately the body corporate has banned fishing, and there are 24 hour security patrols so not going to happen. Been thinking of doing Idas but would need strong security presence. I hear it's literally the wild west. Also would need to get municipality permission I think since it's their dam. You can also try Klipdam, just off the N1 between the R304 and R44. Google coords 33°48'23.87"S 18°47'54.59"E

yeah me and a mate took a drive to techno park yesterday after work 6 30ish, fished with a top water frog for about half an hour, as i literally hooked into a fish the security stopped right by us and told us we were not allowed to fish there.Wasn't the biggest of fish but was still a beautiful take, We asked if there was some way we could get permission and he said we must speak to some woman that works in the building next to the dam

As for idas valley it looks like it has soo much potential and im sure there are some beasts lurking in those waters. Im really considering takeing a chance this weekend with 2 mates. If i do you i shall definatly give you feedback on how it goes.

One of your buddies better stay with the car as this is your greatest risk and the main reason people stopped fishing Idas. It is almost guaranteed to be broken into. I was up there a few years back for a swimming event and the side of the road is littered with window glass from previous break-ins. The organisers hired numerous car guards.You cannot get the car into the dam due to a gate so you have to park next to the road and out of sight. You also pass through the "hood" on your way up to the dam so they know you up there. Good luck if you do decide to go.

is there no way you can park on top of hellshoogte and take abit of a walk down or is driving through the ghetto the only route there?

Sorry cannot help you there. Suggest you do a recce and find out if this is possible.

went fishing there last week Thursday, was worried about the car so we asked the guards at Delaire Graff Estate on helshoogte drive if we can park there and then we walked through the top gate to the dam about 2 km walk, then on monday we spoke to the conservation officer and he let us drive in all the way to the dam. we were fishing right next to my car no problems!

caught 2 small bass but was mid-day with no shade so we left!
