The second leg of our Club Comps was today… 20 fisherman from Slip-Weigh Basscasters and a whole heap from Midlands Bassmasters and the normal Sunday fisherman all hit the dam at once… Howie and I had done really well last Sunday so we prepared to do the same plan again today… but as always fishing is never the same one outing to the next… registration was over and we launched at around 6:15 and we motored across to Cactus points and started to work the banks and coves… there were a few boats in the area which was surprising because this side of the dam isn’t normally as popular… Howie was getting bites and fish on a fluke and crank and I was getting zippo! IN fact Howie had a bag before I got my first bite… I thought that it was going to be a real bummer for me today… but at last the foooshies started to pay some attention to my Pumpkin Pepper Yum Dinger and I started to collect my bag… it was a LOT slower than our previous outing but we persevered…

Both of us had our bag by 09:15 but we needed to cull the small ones… just like last week we went across to Libby Bay were we got 3 kickers in quick succession and we hoped to do the same… but Libby was really dead… after wasting a lot of time in Libby Bay and S-Bends we headed off around Libby Bay and into the main dam and started to fish deeper (15’-25’)… by now I had put away the normal rods and out came my light-weight drop shot rod and Curado reel rigged with my trusty football jig and shaky head worms… first fish was my best of the day… I can’t remember exactly how big it was but it was around 1,3kg’s… and then I started to catch them one after another and managed to cull the rest of my small fish as did Howie.

Two PM was cut off and we headed to the weigh in at 1:45…. I wasn’t expecting to do too well because we really didn’t have any real kickers but most of our fish were reasonable…. I narrowly missed biggest fish and biggest bag (not sure by how much but will check when the results are published)… that honour went to Bryan who got his whole bag on top water and spinner baits! But Howie and I got the Team prize for the biggest combined bag for a boat… so at least we were in the money… that is a first for me…

All in all a very enjoyable day… it kind of adds another dimension when fishing against others… again I didn’t want to leave the dam but by now my voice had gone completely and it was time… both Howie and I coughed and spluttered our way through the whole day with a lekker dose of flu!

Every single one of our fish had to be degassed… Howie is an expert at degassing…

The weather was very kind to us today… it looked pretty ominous some of the time but the rain stayed away and the wind didn’t get up to any degree to cause any pain and anguish… it was overcast the entire day with the exception of a couple of minutes around midday when the sun made a brief appearance. It was warm and the jackets never came out of the lockers…
