Online SHops Bass Tackle - FishingMommy - 01-11-2015
Hi there all,
I was wondering what are the best online shops to look for Bass tackle - my daughter wants to upgrade, and we have only one really good shop in the area and as I have my own business, I hardly ever have time to go to the shops (that and my kids keep me next to dams at any spare time I have!)
Another question : My son saw a line that is multi coloured (changes colour as you reel in due to different colours) on a fishing tv show. He now wants a line like that, but I have no idea where to start looking. Also is this suitable for Bass fishing?

Good afternoon Maryke.
That line I think is power plus braid and the reason it has different colours is for deep sea fishing so one would know how many meters you have recovered if you are say fishing deep. The colours do not maketh the line, I promise you.

Berkley Vanish is rubbish line - it's about as memory-resistant as blou-draad. One to be avoided in my opinion.
Rovex had a camo monofilament that unfortunately was also rubbish - 4 out of 5 knots would fail when tightening up.
Trolling lines are sometimes colour-coded but only come in heavy breaking-strains

Ok - so what do you suppose I tell my 7 year old that WANTS A COLOUR CHANGING LINE - any cool alternatives ????
My current line is a normal (good) 8 pound line, but my knots come loose very easily - lost 2 BIG ones before I started reinforcing my knots and that takes time and weakens the line.

For the youngsters still learning to fish and getting used to baitcasters I would use mono...something link Berkley Big Game in say 10lb. Good all round line.
Mono is a lot cheaper that Fluoro.
I would make an appointment with Malcolm at Ol' Big Mouth and tackle just outside Durbanville. He loves helping the young ones and has very descent tackle at the best prices I have seen in Cape Town. Best part he is a basser at heart (Plasticman on this forum) and he will be able to help with the correct equipment at the correct price.

Googled 'camo monofilament' and got results for Sufix Siege. Sufix is good line and available locally but I've never seen Siege.
Somerset Sports stocks Sufix so drop in and talk to Dirk or Jaap, they might be able to help.
As for knots: I almost exclusively use the Trilene knot which is a variation on the clinch-knot (which I guess you are probably using). It's easy to tie and I've never had a knot fail.
Have a look at Animated Knots and NetKnots.
Remember to moisten the knot with saliva before tightening. Also, if a knot *clicks* when tightening I cut it and start again.

Some good advice here by the guys.
For me personally , and I bet some people would differ. Just try it and see, best mono out there is STREN original. Get it in 12lbs (good for topwater as well) and use a Palomar knot -> easy to tie and strong.
When my wife started fishing I gave her this setup. It casts easy, is super strong and doesn't break the bank.

I will head off to Somerset Sports and take the Lad along. Then they can explain to him the pro's and con's of each line and he can then decide himself?
