Introducing bass into a dam... - BosOtter - 10-31-2014
Wonder if someone can inform me of the rules and regulations regarding stocking a private dam with bass.
The dam is located at one of the Lafarge Quarries outside Durbanville. There are two dams, bottom dam had smallies in years ago, some of you on here probably even had access to that little gem of a dam. Now they do radio controlled boat racing there...
We go there often to shoot at the private shooting range at the top dam with the guy who owns the property. He said I can throw in bass if I like. There are kurper and bluegill in already.
So would one be allowed to just throw in bass, or would that be a no no?
No river out of that dam to anywhere, so fish will not be able to escape...
I will be allowed to fish the bottom dam to see if there are any smallies left, and start moving them to the top dam if there are. (Carp took that dam over as well, so might be no bass left)

All that I know is that you must apply for a permit from Cape Nature. You can find the info and application form on their website.

Maybe Riprap can enlighten you more on the stocking of fish and the requirements thereof.

In terms of the new NEM:BA legislation, bass may be moved into an area that already has bass and is not limited by the new legislation, provided that you apply for and are granted a permit to do so. If you are up to a long read, herewith all you need to know in this regard:

The bluegill and kurper forage base is great and if there are no bass in there, then you will probably find a stunted overcrowded population provided that the carp haven't sucked up all the eggs and fry every spring.
Are you sure that there are no bass in already. If it's a quarry, the water should be clear and have high vantage points from which you can watch what's going on in there. It's never a good idea to stock bass into an existing bass water unless you are culling and replacing with the same biomass but perhaps different genetics.

Thanks for the info guys. Yes, there is a high vantage point and you can see everything in the water. Rocky bottom and sides (quarry after all) with some weed beds as well. I always look at all the fish (kurper and bluegill) when we are there, water very clear most of the year. Never seen any bass though, but might as well make a few casts to make sure. Luckily no carp in that top dam either so they will not be an issue, just the bottom dam that might still have bass has plenty carp.

Being so clear, either fish in very low light and even darkness or try weightless flukes on light line. Both bass and bluegill belong to the sunfish family so they will compete with each other as well. Which sp of kurper are in the quarry?

Which sp of kurper are in the quarry?I actually have no idea which specie Kurper is in there, only seen them from the vantage point 50m+ above them so not to easy to identify them from that angle and distance. Will go down to the bank next time and try to id them at least.
(Damn, going to be embarrassing if it's not Kurper lol)

hey there BosOtter,
that bottom dam you are talking about has NO smallies in and the largies are definitely there but has taken a lot of pressure from the boats, carp and as well as the fisherman. on a good day u will get anything upto 2.5kg in that dam.
it would be a pitty to take them out that dam as it is already a struggle to target them there. The quality of the fish are great bar the colour as the water is no days permanently stained due to the carp...
