New to bassing - Gen - 01-09-2014 Hi guys (and hopefully girls!) Decided to join the forum after finding myself following nearly all the forum topics; this is more addictive than fb! The last time I caught a bass was about 12 years ago, and that was not really using any skill seeing it was in a small farm dam! Anyways, I'm a student at Stellenbosch University (getting worried yet :eusa_think: ) and have just started my PhD/ doctorate working on Smallies. Now you probably freeking out, but rest assured, I will not be telling you to destroy your precious fish (I'm not a conservationist, only a zoologist). I will be looking at their genetics and do a few measurements to compare them to their native counterparts in the Great Lakes. So no worries ( I hope! :eusa_pray: ). I'm hoping to work with you guys, or better yet, you catching and me following with a cocktail in hand :eusa_dance: . Just kidding, I like catching my own specimens, but most likely will need help 'coz I am aiming for a large sample size across S.A. So, hope I can call on you guys when needing some free field assistants (studente is mos ma arm), beer could be organized though... Cheers! Gen Re: New to bassing - Nico Carelse - 01-09-2014 Whahahaha welcome.... If you can come to NW in winter time i can make sure you get some nice fish. @.5-3.5 is no prob. Would love to help and learn more. Re: New to bassing - Q - 01-09-2014 I think you should hook up with Supersalami. Where is Paul? Last I saw him was at Clan kbt classic. But send him a PM. He is also from Stellenbosch (studying??, not sure) Re: New to bassing - jmgravenor - 01-09-2014 Howzit bud. What you're studying sounds super interesting! Also want to go into that field. Re: New to bassing - Riprap - 01-09-2014 Welcome boet, if you are looking for some EC smallies I'm sure there are a couple of guys who will take you out for some fun or the best is to do what the Rhodes students do and come to the outings and then take your pick of fish.... Enjoy the site....hope some girls were reading your post, haha. Re: New to bassing - Gen - 01-10-2014 Hi guys, Thanks for the replies! Nico - Thanks for the offer, will keep in touch when I eventually start sampling intensively. Thanx Q, will see if I can get hold of him. @ JM, let me know if you need info. regarding undergrad etc. Happy to help if you need info. Riprap: will def. be joining the guys in the EC and intend on follong the Rhodes' students lead. Starting with the TWK classic. Oh ja, FYI, I AM a girl :blue-biggrin: Re: New to bassing - Shamwari - 01-10-2014 A girl that schmaaks fishing and beer! You have earned yourself 1000 Super-duper Points! Re: New to bassing - Riprap - 01-10-2014 Ok Gen, you got me there.....oops and apologies. :blue-redface: Perhaps update your profile pic so no more confusion. Gerry Taylor (from Rhodes) did all her work on bass within our club and we looked after her so no safety issues, guarenteed. Re: New to bassing - Gen - 01-10-2014 All good Rip :blue-lol: I'm guessing Gerry was supervised by Olaf Weyl (he is one of my superviors as well). Re: New to bassing - Navrik - 01-10-2014 Ah another contender for Miss BFSA...since all the other ladies have gone quiet I still blame Floatie for scaring them all off. Now that we know you are a girl brace yourself for all the offers from all over the country :blue-biggrin: Re: New to bassing - Riprap - 01-10-2014 Gen Wrote:All good Rip :blue-lol: I'm guessing Gerry was supervised by Olaf Weyl (he is one of my superviors as well). Your guess would be correct madam and Olaf is a member of our Club. Re: New to bassing - Bass_Assasin - 01-10-2014 Hi Gen. That sounds like a lekker course. I live in mosselbay, but im working/studying in cape town. I know of a few spots with some smallies around mosselbay. What do need to do with the smallies? DNA samples, measurements ect? Do you need dead fish, or do you take dna samples and measurements of live fish. Re: New to bassing - Riprap - 01-11-2014 BA, although fish do sometimes die (cos this is a blood sport....) most samples are from live fish. From time to time (excluding the spearos.....) fish need to be despatched for age analysis and other as otoliths are more accurate age determinators than scales. It is never killing for the sake of killing. Re: New to bassing - Bass_Assasin - 01-11-2014 Cool rip. Im aware bass that will be killed are used and tested so we can learn more. I am 100% for it. So if i catch a smallie here in mosselbay and its a bad hook and the fish dies, must i take out the earbones and take a few scales and take measurements and a photo? |
