My Dream Bass Dams - Shamwari - 11-14-2013

As Aunty Jimyma (Jim) whined about me sharing my top 10 tunes which is not fishing related :blue-badgrin: ...I though I would share my favourite bass dams that I have fished over the years...

So, in no particular order...

1) Various Bass dams in Zimbabwe - Timber and more timber - Most memorable techniques - Buzz Baits and hammering fish on an old fashioned Slider plastics and plenty other techniques

2) Fanie Botha - Tzaneen - man, I still love that dam...structure galore..most memorable technique(s) - Texas rigged Trickworms in Bubblegum colour...we used to hammer fish like...and many other techniques.

3) Mala Mala Dam in Phalaborwa - This dam is where I started bassing - Lily pads, humps, tyres, reeds, weeds, timber...what a dam - Most memorable technique - Only fishing a dying flutter and moering the fish with that lure...

4) Private Dam in Letsitele - What a dam, HUGE bass - Timber, Weeds and Lily's - Most memorable technique - Sensation Kick Tail Frog (or whatever its called)...deadly

5) Witpoortjie in Potch - Timber and cliffs - Most memorable technique - Buzz Bait and Spinner bait. Lekker dam this, with plenty 1.5kg fooshies coming out in a days fishing.

6) Thuka Wetlands - Bass Nirvana - Lilys and weeds - Most memorable techniques - Spinnerbaits and Buzzbaits - GY kreatures proving to be deadly there as well.

7) Rietvlei in Centurion PTA - the lekker thing was one could pull in there after work - Most memorable technique - Spinnerbaits and Weightless flukes or Hatch Matches...that dam holds a lot of quality fish..getting a lot of pressure now

8) Recently (after moving to CT) - Mofam - speaks for itself really...most memorable technique - my 1st time there, I nailed fish on a square bill crankbait

9) Nandoni - YOH! Awesome dam - Timber, sunken buildings, Riprap - Most memorable technique - Fishing the riprap with a Norman Middle-N crank in Lavender Shad...deadly and of course spinnerbaits, plastics etc.

10) A couple of private dams in Magoebaskloof - Weeds, timber - Most memorable technique - Weigtless Sencos...enough said.

So there is my waffle, obviously, fished a whole lot of other dams, but I got gatvol of typing.

Re: My Dream Bass Dams - PhalaBass - 11-15-2013

I got a contact at Mala Mala. Went there on Monday. Hooked into a fish which I thought could be my new PB. Ended up being a +-8kg Barbel. Gave me a great fight though. Caught 6 nice quality bass in about 2 hours.

Derick? That you?

I would go mal if I could fish Mala Mala again...

Re: My Dream Bass Dams - PhalaBass - 11-15-2013

Jip, it's me :blue-badgrin:
Don't go there too often though. The sides are very overgrown. I reckon you could have the fishing day of your life if you can get a boat on there somehow. I went with a friend, and we got a fish or at least a bite from every fishable spot we could reach.

Re: My Dream Bass Dams - Shamwari - 11-15-2013

Ha Ha Derick...lekker boet. Remember fishing at Sefapani...some nice bass there.

Ja, Mala Mala has been untouched now for what, 8 years? There must be duma bass in there boet.

I love that place. I often tell stories of getting there and checking lion spoor all over, or camping there under the stars and waking up to lions roaring on the golf coarse, which as you know is just friggin there. I have dossed in the old toilets a few times there owing to lions or hyenas getting too close ha ha ha. What a life!

I remember, when I started out bass fishing in 1994, all I used at MM was sliders, dying flutter and a small orange / gold rapala...and I flippen hammered fish. What a place hey!

Re: My Dream Bass Dams - dreamfish - 11-15-2013

Mmmm... Slider worms... wonder what ever happened to them? Black with chartreuse tail... killer lures! Still have an old dying flutter in my box... must be about 20 years old now! Still works. :blue-cool:

Re: My Dream Bass Dams - Shamwari - 11-15-2013

For yonks they were off the shelves, but if you go to Mias in Woodmead, lo and behold, you can the original Charlie Brewer Sliders in all colours and even the proper slider hooks, although the gauge of the wire on those hooks is way too thin.

What worked for us was pumpkin seed, white laminate and the black with chartreuse tail.

We put a 45kg Barbel in there in about 1982...
