The effect of pressure on Bass
After a lot of homework on Barometric pressure and its affect it has on bass I have come to one conclusion that none of it makes sense after reading up on this topic and taking into account the views of the pros this is what I have found on the topic:
Fairly good fishing from: 1016,322mb to 1017,678mb
Best fishing when dropping from: 1017,687mb to 1016,322mb
Worst Fishing if it drops below: 1013,61mb and above 1022.085mb
Now this is where it gets interesting we had our best fishing on Saturday on Kwaggas when the pressure was rising from 1008mb to 1013,21mb and according to the pros this is the worst for fish?
The only thing that does make sense to me and this is not rocket science is that higher the pressure the more pressure on the water and this has a bigger affect on the shallow dwelling bass than its deeper dwelling counterparts. And the normal rule of thumb for the pros are the higher the pressure the deeper they will start fishing and the lower the pressure the shallower they will start fishing.
Yet again what happened at Kwaggas this weekend blew their whole theory on low pressure out of the water. If any of you could shed some light on this topic it would be great.

Roy I cannot agree with you more.
I'm as confused as a Chameleon on Smarty Box when it comes to pressure lately. At one stage I was so convinced that the biggest influence on the fish was pressure and had great outings when the pressure drops suddenly and sharply. I was so convinced that it was the best time for fishing that I would go out of my to go and fish when this happens only to learn, of late, that it is not a given. In fact I have had some of my worse days lately when the pressure drops where as some time ago it was the best outings. :blue-rolleyes:
Even got myself the Casio Triple Sensor watch just to monitor the pressure and found that it differ just about every time. I have come to the conclusion to not pay any more attention to the pressure and just go and fish. :blue-cool:

I couldn't agree more, I used to be a little fixated on the barometer thing and even wouldn't go fishing if it was to high. Waiting for the falling baro and so on and so on.
Time on the water has change all what I have read and now just fish regardless. No matter what the baro reads you can always catch fish. High or low falling or rising. Some day are tougher than others but you can always catch fish.

The way I see it is like this.
Higher pressure makes the fish uncomfortable.
It's like a rainy day for us humans. It may be uncomfortable for us but we still have to get up go for work, eat, drink, pick up the kids and do all the day to day activities.
The bass have to do the same it's a bit uncomfortable for them, so a little extra effort in presentation and patience from the angler can make a difference. :blue-biggrin:

I gave up on pressure a while ago… mainly because when I get the chance to go fishing I go... And compos are on a Saturday regardless of the pressure and weather.
But I still think a dropping pressure before it starts to go back up is best.

Also remember. The pressure sweetspots differ from next to the coast to higher up in the gauteng region. Also remember...BASS DO NOT READ THE BOOKS WE READ. But if they did, they are most probably doing it during blue bird skies (high pressure), becuase that is when I get the least action by far :blue-biggrin:

Ive heard that fishing will be 'good' 1 day before and 2 days after a cold front.
But this winter a couple time I was fishing in the middle of a coulf front in the pouring rain and had some of my best fishing.
If your line isnt in the water then you wont catch bass so go fishing whenever you can even if it is when the air pressure is sky high just so you how you need the fish in order to catch the bass incase it happens during a comp.

All I can say is that I like what the pressure did to our fishing experience last Saturday :blue-biggrin: but I agree with Rob in that we have to learn and adapt to all conditions and rather figure out different go to patterns for the different conditions.

Hi Southpaw.
I check the pressure a couple of times while fishing.It gives me an idea of how to fish and what tactic to use,eg. a high pressure i find best using finesse,really slowly aswell,I have proven this over and over.
