Do one still need to buy a fishing license? Is so, where can one get one?

Yes you do? I bought mine from Msini Holdings in Hillcrest. Not sure where in PTA you would buy them?

Pottie that is a million dollar question in Gauteng. Yes you are, but if you can find somewhere that can supply you with one please let the rest of us know. :wink:

I am not sure how it works in the JHB or Pretoria area but i just went to my local Post Office and fill in a form and pay 45 bucks and i'm done for another year.
It is very convenient and you can get the salt water fishing license as well(not that i bother)

Just a heads up....
King Dinger, that license you bought is only valid for dams here in KZN controlled by Msinsi holdings..... If you were to go fish dams in Jhb you would need a fresh water permit to fish their waters....
Like wise for the likes of Pottie and Bronnie who purchased permits in their areas.... If they were to come fish Alberts for instance, they would have to but an Msinsi permit as well.....

In the coastal areas it is as simple as walking into the local PO and filling out a form, paying your money and walking out with a fishing license. I do it every time I go to the coast and buy a monthly license.
However if you go to a PO in Gauteng the response you will get is ehhh, a scratch of thier head to put thier brain into gear and finally a response of "we dont have such things" some will even go as far as telling you that you dont need such a thing or to go to the license department. You used to be able to buy them at any tackle shop as well but not any more. If they were avaliable I would be first in line.

Msinsi holdings is a private venture. You can buy a permit at the gate but it is not a license only a permit that allows you to fish at Msinsi held water. Both Alberts and Inanda fall under Msinsi holdings so robfisher shouldnt have a problem, but if he had to fish rock or surf or another dam in KZN that is not controlled by Msinsi he would have a problem. For that you need a license from the PO and it is only valid for KZN, if he went to the cape or Gauteng another license for that province is required and can only be purchased in that province. (I did my homework when I came to Alberts)

Yip spot on Pomerob? I still need to get to a post office for my general fishing licence?. But the thought of standing in a queue with the great unwashed doesn?t appeal to me too much. I really don?t do queues very well. The only place on earth I have seen a queue work well is in Disney World? oh and in the UK in the underground because the Poms really know how to queue as well. ;-)

I booked at Midmar and camped over a long weekend there....
When I paid for my accomodation I asked how much was their fishing license..... The lady replied" you don't need one to fish our dam!"
Thank you very muuuch!!!! I was outta there.... then I caught a couple of little ones and thought.... mmmmm.... this is why they don't charge.... only little fry to be caught..... hehehehehee....

I'm keen to support the conservation of our beloved green fish so, after moving to 'the big smoke', I too wanted to purchase a licence. I went to the local PO with no joy. Then I contacted Charles Stewart at Angling Africa and asked his opinion. I told him I'd heard that the law can confiscate one's tackle and he replied that they indeed can do that, but only if they can provide said license. His advice was that should I be approached by anyone, I must offer to pay for a valid license from them - apparently they can't do squat unless I refuse to purchase a valid license from them there and then.... another case of too many laws and no effective way of enforcing/providing service delivery.... pi##es me off! :twisted:

kick the gravy train riders outta the train, give it to a private company and run it like it should be ran. I dont have a problem with buying a license. The USA genrated $4.8billion in fishing license and related taxes in 2001. makes you wonder :?:

IF the system was run properly there would be a heap of money available to upgrade facilitie etc. It would also be possible to properly police the waters and boats using them.
