Well I finally cracked and bought a fly rod and some stinking flys yesterday... never held a fly rod before but I'm gonna try nail a trout and a bass on it this coming week! Off to the berg tomorrow with the family! I hope to sneak out and find some water to play in!

Lekker, I took a couple of years off bass fishing some time back and concentrated on fly fishing, mainly for trout in the Western Cape streams. I often caught smallies in the Elandspad and Holsloot rivers, they were small but a lot of fun on a 4 weight fly rod. A trout is also a great fighting fish, not as strong as a bass but much more determined, they'll fight to the end (and are good to eat :blue-evil
You're in for some great sport, enjoy.

Trout is only good for one thing and that is to eat...
I do a lot of fly fishing. If Oom want a lekka fighr, take the boat and go to sterkfontein dam and hit those yellow fish on fly..Life changing experience!!!!

It's awesome if you get it right Mr Fisher... I got 2 fly rods and catching bass and even carp on them is a jol!! My biggest carp on fly is over 4kg's and that was hectic! But I have only caught small bass on them... :blue-redface: never the less give it horns! Good luck!

Also have done my fair share of flyfishing. Got a few trout and while I was up in JHB in Dec/Jan I tried my luck for yellows and muddies in the Vaal, only managed to get one muddie.

Mr Fisher here is a reminder that you can nail some lekker size bass with a fly rod! Warrenx with a fine 2.4kg largie caught at Goedies with a fly. :blue-cool:

I love fly fishing.
When i was in jhb I fished for yellows in the vaal river almost exclusively. Now I fish the western cape streams every now and then with my 3 weight and target larger trout in winter in the dams in and around the WC.
They good fun and give you a good rev on a fly rod.
Hopefully targeting some smallmouth on the breede on a float tube in the near future.

We went to a self-catering house (very nice) right next to Drakensberg Sun… I didn’t get to fish much at all and it was more a relaxing few days with our best mates from Pretoria… so it was dinking Port and coffee and the occasional excursion to see the local attractions… we had access to the dam at Drak Sun and they tell me it was stocked with Trout a week or two ago and they also said there are bass in the dam… I saw no activity of either… I threw a few bass baits around for a while with no so much as a bite… and then I tried the traffic cop thing with the fly rod and discovered that you really need some open space… I lost 2 fly’s in the bushes and gave it up as a bad job… I’ll give the rod a whirl on my next trip to Inanda!

OK got myself a Fly-fishing DVD to explain the basics… also got a crash course in casting from Lyle at Neil’s shop… will take the stinking fly rod with me on the boat and give it a go on our next outing!
