COC - Fuel & Batt's - Tornado - 03-11-2009
COC - Seperation of fuel tank from Batt's
Folks - I contacted Allan Fagan who is building the Tornado under licence in order to order the bulkhead for my Tornado (bulkhead is the "device" used to seperate the fuel tank from batts") Allan has the templates and has been supplying to the anglers for some time.When I contacted him he informed me he had just received an e-mail who's author is Hilton Jones of SAMSA -Durban .
It reads as follows
1)If the fuel tank is a permanent fixture , of robust construction and as such fitted into the boat with external filler cap and is vented externally as well , then the bulkhead is not required !!
2)If the tank is the normel type which is carried by the majority of ski boats - and is portable and is not permanent then the bulkhead is required

My boat falls into Cat 1 above HOWEVER the battery must be contained in a covered battery box . They checked this when I did my coc...
Another interpretation "loophole " ????

Well - according to Allan Fagan - if your boat meets the requirements as per 1) above , u do not need it.He should know , he's building the rigs and has to know the regulations.I have printed the e-mail and will keep it in my boat.I will also check with our local Safety Officer.Its the same old story again - THE REGULATIONS KEEP CHANGING - ONE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THE OTHER ARSE IS DOING !!! :blue-evil:

i just spoke to barry at wad boats...he will be doing the cof for the boat shortly...i asked him a few questions about the cof and all i am gona say is rather speak to the person who is gona do the cof before you go out and waste money on everything you have heard on websites...just do what is required by the person who is gona do the test.

Different SAMSA officials will tell you different things, (ways of complying), at the end of the day both will meet the requirements.
I used Barry and can recommend him.

I had my T-Bird inspected , it has a built in tank with external filler which is also vented , batteries had to the plastic battery boxers and covered if they were kept in the same hatch as the built in tank.End of the day its down to your own saftey and preventing fires.If the tank was not a fixed feature batteries had to be separated , not in the same hatch or separated with a bulk head .There no short cuts , if you do what is required and have the equip there wont be an issue.
My boat inspection was twenty mins and inspector very happy, so was i that boat is legal and dam worthy
