howdy boys. did some reading on winter bassin and i found that some ppl tell ya to decrease the size of your lure and others to upsize to jumbo.
what's your take on this cause i'm quite new to this winter bassing thing.

Ike I would say at the begining of winter upsizing would be a good thing as the fish will be feeding for the winter and eat as much as possible. Later as the weather stabalises I would move to some smaller lures as they will not be as hungry. You can nevr count something out though. One big meal in winter might be what they are looking for.
I would have both bigger and smaller lures rigged on any given day during winter....

I'm with you on this BM..... They would prefer a fat meal that they don't have to work hard for instead of fast moving smaller baits.... They want to burn up as little fat as possible chasing their next meal..... :-? :roll:
I usually fish 4" - 6" baits and don't think I'd change in winter.... :roll:

Big or small, I think the main ingrediant is to slow everything down and keep tight to cover.

Agreed Pomerob, the speed of your retrieve needs to slow down to a dead stop at times and only just faster the rest of the time.

Doug Hannon ?The Bass Professor? says that winter time is by far the best time to catch BIG bass. He says he will use 14inch worms at this time of the year.

I have also read it, and yes I do agree. However if your looking for a good or winning bag, do you want to spend all day looking for 1 piggy?
Winter certainly is the time to go piggy hunting, but I would worry about going to big in lure size in a comp. I would rather have 5 x 1.5 kg fish than maybe 1 x 4kg fish.
Again it has a lot to do with confidence. If you can leave a 5" dinger in the water for long periods and fish the bottom slowly, I think you will have more chance than if you put a 14" worm on and only have the confideance to leave it in the water for 15secs before reeling it back.

I wouldn?t really upsize my lure but I would rather go for something that got a bit more balk to it, something like 5? creature baits. During winter I also found that white baits produce some kicker fish for me!
