Hi Guys,

I am looking at buying a Side imaging fishfinder and would like some expert advice on which one to buy. The following are the ones that I have identified and which fall within my budget, they are all Humminbirds:

Helix 5 si gps combo
398ci SI
698 ci hd si
798 ci hd si combo
899 cihd si combo

Any advice and suggestions would really be appreciated.

Regards

Pieter

I have a Helix 5 DI GPS and I'm real happy with it. Although its geofenced a little head-math never hurt. Smile

I have a Humminbird 998, but if I have to buy a new unit now I'd go Lowrance just for the superior mapping in SA.

SI is way more useful than DI in the majority of our dams...

I have to agree there. Available mapping is horrible for poor Humm units. Lets call it limited. The Helix units have a MICROSD slot so the SD Navionics wont work either you need Gold or + on a MicroSD, the platinium + is also not supported and also not C-map.

If you can live with driving on "land" on your screen and only work your waypoints and tracks on what you see its a Win.

I also believe the Lowrance maps are better and also because of the great work John E (Fishton) has been doing mapping so many lakes etc. He's a legend for that ! Smile

Guys,
Thanx for the feedback, I hear you about the mapping but I am more interested in the SI feature and cannot seem to find a Lowrance unit with SI that is in the same sort of price range. Maybe u can help me with that.

Thanx in anticipation.

I've also been looking at the Helix 5 Si GPS, will be keeping an eye on this post. Anybody know where you can find them locally?

At the moment, the person/s holding the import of the brand are taking forever , people are not being helped, imports are not happening and there are some slanting going on about unethical behavior etc... I have heard rumors that another company will also be importing really soon, I am talking 4 weeks. As soon as I can confirm this I will gooi a post on here.

I really like my Helix but I did import it myself thus the geo-fencing...
It will be a big step in the right direction if we can get a local brand holder whom is willing to do the leg work.
