The American sports channels ESPN (230) and ESPN Classic (231) will no longer be offered in Africa by DStv, effective July 31.

ESPN, which is owned by Disney, made the decision to yank the channels in all non-US territories where their operations are no longer financially viable.

A version of ESPN will however continue to air in the UK after a deal was struck with BT.

This potentially opens up the market for SuperSport - or the SABC - to acquire the rights to broadcast major US sports events such as baseball, basketball, the NFL in South Africa and the rest of Africa.

No more "Day on the Lake"
No more "Facts of fishing with Dave Mercer"

But you bet your a$$ that multichoice wont touch the monthly subs!

So sad now all we will have to do with is the local content.

I don't care for anything but the fishing on those advert channels and now even that's gone.

you can bet your last $$$$ no discount or change other than increase will be made!!! :blue-evil: :blue-evil: :blue-evil: :blue-evil:

to add to it all, I tried to order a range of DVDs from Bassmaster magazine as per their advert on all the pro tips and elite series events, a range of 5 DVDs or something. The answer to that was that its only for US subscribers and after following up with BASS as we have to be a member of to fish nationals and must subscribe to BASSMASTER, I was informed that the DVDs are not produced in a format that can be used outside of USA. WTF :blue-evil:

What they mean by it not working is that the DVD is on a different zone. This is however not a problem as 99% of DVD players allow you with a few clever remote control remands to clean the zone 2 only setting and make the DVD player zone free.

Just buy it through a US local contact or ask someone like Hero who I think is in the states at the moment to bring it back with him.

Not good that ESPN is being dropped. I guess this opens the local market up for bass only replacement shows :blue-cool:

You battle with bassmaster, i have been a member for a few years and they always advertise great gifts to the value of 100's of dollars yet the will refuse to send it outside of the USA or to someone you might know in the states, it apparently has to be delivered to the address on your magazine. Still great magazine though. As for the fishing programmes its a sad loss, those few shows were the only good thing to watch on a weekend. Atleast Freespool Angling is back on and they fish fresh water occasionally.

Last Bass show on Free Spool Angling was great. Even Fishing 365 has the occasional bass and yellow fish session in amongst all the papgooi. Last one showed the Vaal venue where the nationals are going to happen.

I must admit - that is pretty funny! But i cannot take the credit for that statement - that little gem comes from News24.

SABC doesn't give a rats a$$ about fishing...
