Shongweni Dam

Has anybody been up to Shongweni Dam recently? The little bit of information I can find online doesn't say anything about bass fishing at that dam, only Albert Falls and Inanda.

Anyway I went a few years back and the dam was almost empty! I'm keen to take a drive this weekend if the weather holds up to see if it has any water (and bass LOL)

Any advice will be much appreciated!

The dam is plenty full enough with fish being caught there regularly! I haven’t fished that dam for over a hundred years but chatting to people who have I would head to the reeds!

Pop into Bass Warehouse and chat to Dwayne… he fishes there a lot and will give you some solid info!

Hi Carl

I would give Shongweni a miss and rather fish Inanda.

I was at Shongs for a quick session before work this morning and the water is very muddy. That said some mates have still been catching there and the evening bite is better. I managed a few young-ones this morning on Junebug c-tail worm fished slowly.

Rob is correct, fish the reeds near the Kayak club and the bank infront of the chalets.

I haven't been to Shongweni for a while. You are not allowed petrol motors but sneakers and kickboats are welcomed. It you have either I would head towards the wall. There are reeds along the way and water is slightly warmer on the other side of the wall where the river comes in. Let us know how it goes.

Howsit, i fish shongs about twice a week. it is a schizophrenic dam and very tough to fish. When i first fished shongs I would blank most of the time, and when ever I see anglers out on the water they usually have caught nothing. BUT if you are willing to put time into shongweni she will reward you. I now catch everytime I go out and end up with some very nice bags. Average size of fish is about 600g and there are plenty fish over a kilo. Dwayne is the absolute master of shongweni so absolutely give him a call.

From my experience shongs needs to be fished slow and right in the thick stuff. So bring weedless lures. Also plenty rip rap (rocks) and cliff and jigs tend to produce in those areas.
There are also plenty of big barbel and tilapia, so bring stuff that could cover a variety of species. the 3 River mouths are also good spots btw.

When a dam says no petrol can you leave your motor on just not use it or do you have to take it off as this will upset your boats balance and stuf surely? sorry might be a dumb question but i am new to boating.

Depending on the dam I presume but Shongweni is not strict so you could leave it on.

They have a staff boat with a motor so it is a bit of a contradiction.

Actually I would take it off for Shongweni as there is no slipway and that extra weight it as killer when taking the boat off the trailer.
