riprap Wrote:Fish were offshore??

Jip, that seems to happen ussually.

Look, I am not basing this on just yesterday. Its generally the way I find it when its full moon.
You have a pretty good morning bite usually which then dicipates to absolutely nothing. I have had occasions where it has been crazy (and we all know that there are several factors influencing this), but in general it sucks for me over full moons. Ill stick to it. Did however learn something valuable from someone very good about what to do when this occurs. Will try and dupplicate it in future and see if it stick
One fish can change it all.....

Mostly in shallow rock piles, and the edge of reed beds and a few off shore but mostly shallow!

I did not see this treat until today ,but let me tell you that i have had the weekend of my life.
Fished my friends farm dam,caught 4 fish = 11,5kg's ,3,5kg x1 ,3.0kg x 2, 2.0kg x 1 on saterday,sunday in club compo i got a HUGE bass,the head was of a 5kg fish but the body was so small and skinny,looked like those bodybuilder joke pictures,resulted only in 2,9kg's.
So i can say that the fishing was on.

Was the barometric pressure low in KZN?
Pressure was high in the Cape. Fishing was tough.

I'm no expert on solunar theories (find it very interesting), but I've checked the moonrise/set and sunrise/set before every fishing trip for the last couple of years. Believe that fish get more active around moonrise/set, especially if the moonrise/set is not close to the sunrise/set. I will always try to be in a productive area around the moonrise/set.
Alsio agree with August that fish go of the bite on the full moon, especially if the moonset is close to the sunrise.

This weekend's fishing around the country is really interesting. I think it's got to do with the barometric pressure.

This is such an interesting subject!
The "solunar" rule of thumb says that 45min before and after moon rise & set is the best time to fish. New and full moon have the greatest effect and thus should deliver the best results!

Where we fished on sat, the moon (full) only rose @ 16h50 - a full 50min after we had to weigh in and many okes battled to find fish. During the day, baitballs of bluegill & kurper were observed in 5-7m of water.

Who fishes by the moon and keeps an accurate log book which can verify this theory??

Aha, all you neet to check now is what were the times of the sun rises, if the moon and sun rises were far appart from each other e.g. 7 hours plus then the fishing accourding to CBC would have been great. :blue-cool:

The dam where I fish is a bit of a funny place. Its fed by a spring, its rectangular in shape, fairly shallow. Full of hydrillia. Crystal clear water. Bout 400m x 100m. Full of bass, stocked by the club members that bring fish from the neighboring farm dams.

Ive been told a few 3kg plus bass has been put in, but obviously no one seems to be catching anything over 1 kg.

Fish have enough forage it seems, smaller bass are all fat, big bodies compared to there head size.

Ive found during the day fishing is really hard, because the water is so clear perhaps? So i put on a big spinnerbait and chuck it as deep I can, then quickly reel it in so it clears the grass. Normally works fine. Well only landed 2 smallish bass like this. This weekend the wind was fairly strong. it was fairly hot and seemed like good fishing weather and the bait seemed to make sense. But no. Only landed 2 where I normally land 10 for the same duration.

Put on a fluke, twitching it & then let it sink again.Nope didn't work. Put on a damiki top-water. Dint work, until the sun set...

In 15/20 minutes since the sun went down I probably landed about 10 fish in a area that was about 10m stretch of shoreline.

Moon was bigger than usual. I was catching bass about 5meters from the shore, right in front of me. working a small baby spook as slowly as possibly, just let it twitch so the water wrinkels around it and then let it sit dead steel for 10 seconds. The slower the better. Then WAM SPLASH...they take it. Was actualy amazed how shallow bass will feed especially your bigger bass.

So my best catch of the night:

Was really amazed at the size because you simply don't seem to catch anything over 400g. The head was HUGE and the body really skinny. Was about to leave when I hooked into this.

Anybody know why bass become so skinny? especially in a dam where there are plenty of forage and other bass are all fairly fat?
